My wife and, both seasoned and uncomplicated travelers, left the hotel shortly after checking in due to the completely unacceptable and likely hazardous state of the room we were assigned (#15). Supposedly, as booked, a business class room of the highest offered standard.
The room was moldy and more than just “damp”. It smelled of mold (fungus) and was clearly unhealthy.
We mentioned this to the receptionist and asked to be moved - even if necessary to a lower standard room on the ground floor (as opposed to underground). We were told there were no other rooms available and offered a dehumidifier for the moisture and an air freshener for the smell! (The fact that a dehumidifier was readily available on site is clear evidence of this being a known problem yet the underlying cause and the damage to the building has clearly not been addressed - something the authorities no doubt would find interesting and take into account).
After about an hour, during which I was on a business call and unable to take action about the room condition, the reservoir of the dehumidifier was already 1/3 full of water - a volume I would estimate to be more than 2 liters. This fact too tells of the magnitude of the problem.
I should mention that my wife is an architect and is in no doubt the condition and smell of the room is a clear indication of a structural problem that will only get worse unless addressed professionally.
Having gotten no acceptable solution from the receptionist, I contacted Hotels.com through which I had made the reservation and paid for the two nights. Hotels.com acted professionally, but I was eventually told that they had been in contact with the hotel staff who denied all responsibility and refused to accept full or partial cancellation of the booking. (The rate I paid was SGD 264.27 per night or SGD 528.54 in total for the two nights).
On top of the appalling state of the room, and the lack of problem solving means by the staff, the refusal to accept full or even partial (2nd night) cancellation without pay, was unfathomable and unacceptable.
Confronted with the above sent by email to Kelvin the manager, I received a disappointing, but not surprising, totally unacceptable reply in which all responsibility was denied and our justified complaint was dismissed.
We are filing a report with the local authorities as we firmly believe the hotel, or at least this “dungeon” room, constitutes a health hazard.
Unless and until the hotel is refurbished we highly advise all travelers to avoid it.
