Owner description: This hillside tram is over 100 years old and is now a national monument. Tourists can still ride the lift today and take in breathtaking panoramic views of downtown and the ocean.

Riding an ascensor (and there are many) is a must when you visit Valparaiso, and they are s cheap ($0.20 - $075) and great fun.

A lovely, old school way to climb the hill.

It's 300 pesos each way but the views are worth it and the staff are cheery.

The elevators of Valparaiso are something so particular and unique that you absolutely can't miss them during your visit. They are still the original ones built at the beginning of last century, some put back in order after some restoration works, some others unfortunately still have to be repaired. I took many of them, the elevator Artilleria was my favourite. Quite close to the portal area, it leads to the Cerro Artilleria, just under the Museo Maritimo. Right at the exit there's a lovely panoramic terrace with a little art crafts market and a spectacular panorama of the whole town. On a side you can have a close view over the port and the ocean, on the other side there are the wonderful Valparaiso hills with all their coloured, typical houses. You can go up to Cierro Artilleria by food, but taking the elevator is something else, it's takes you back to the old times, it has a great atmosphere in its simplicity. Simply amazing!

Easily the most dodgy of all Valparaiso's funiculars, this one is seriously old and it feels rickety, and though it may break catastrophically at any stage. The car itself, feels as though it may fall apart as you ascend/descend.

Having said that, the views are very good and it's a cool method of transport. Just some upgrades and maintenance would not go amiss...

It's hard to choose which ascensor to use since there are so many in town. If you don't have much time to visit Valparaiso, I would definitely go for this one. The view from the top is breathtaking and the ride down is a good thrill. And of course it is really cheap!
