Located within walking distance of the old town this small hotel is an ideal launching pad for exploring Quito. The hotel is protected by locked security gates and the rooms are located around a grassed courtyard with tables and seating. An American breakfast is included and drinking water is freely available. There are a variety of restaurants close by.

I'm torn writing this review. I like the hotel. It's a very nice building, the staff are great, and the room in general is fine. However, the room was freezing cold at night when I was there and there is no central heat or air. The second night the staff provided a space heater, which worked well, but still, the room was so cold until the space heater got going.

Very pleasant stay, comfortable beds in large sized rooms. Sometimes water could be a little slow to heat up but otherwise great showers. The staff at the hotel were very helpful as I used the hotel as a base whilst travelling to and from the city.

The La Cartuja is a small building located close to many shops, restraunts, markets and park land. The building was beautiful and comfortable. The staff went above and beyond every time anything was requested. I would definetly stay here again

We stayed here as part of our Intrepid Ultimate Galapagos Central Islands (Daphne) tour - if you want to see my long and comprehensive review of that tour, look up my forum posts (in the Galapagos section).

I think 3 things are critical to hotel stays - Location, Sleep, and Shower.

LOCATION: 3.5/5 Right near a large park and a quieter area of town that felt very safe. Right next to a McDonalds (please don't) and within a 10-minute walk to markets/ other restaurants. The owner sent us to a nice square with lots of food options but turns out it was the tourist area where meals were $10 each, as opposed to normal local dinner prices of about $5 each. Hotel is behind a security gate that you have to buzz-in to enter.

GOOD SLEEP: 4/5 Comfortable bedding and quiet. Our room was off a central courtyard. We had a 5AM departure so much of the stay was a blur.

SHOWER: 3.5/5 Nice stand in shower with hot water and old school shower head. Soap/ Shampoo provided.

Other random feedback:
- Nice and clean property, supposedly an older British Embassy (makes sense as lots of other embassies are nearby - speaks to it being a pretty secure area).
- No bottled water provided in your room, but you can buy it easily outside the property for about $0.55 per bottle or fill up your water bottles for free in their kitchen area water dispenser machine.
- Our breakfast was a basic yogurt drink and cheese sandwich (packed for us, due to early departure).
- Free WIFI which worked great.
- A few people commented that their rooms were freezing cold (March)

Overall this was a nice local hotel and we had no issues and would easily stay again (particularly at their affordable rates). Taxi to this part of the city from the international airport is $25 USD (fixed rate from airport), and they give you a card to return to the airport for $20 USD if you use the same company. If you really want to be in old town, you might consider another property, but it is only a $4 USD taxi fare to old-town from here (too far to walk). We took the daily (except Sunday) 10:30AM Free Walking Tour Ecuador provided by Community Hostel - it was great (hostel looked very nice too!) and an incredible deal for an approximate 3-hour tour for free (only a tip requested).
