We took a two day tour to Transylvania with Gaby. We loved it and had a great time. It was very easy to book with this company. They answer questions and emails promptly and the arrangements are easy and convenient. Gaby was a wonderful guide. He is very experienced, has an encyclopedic knowledge of Romanian history, and suggested dishes from Romanian cuisine for us to try. Transylvania is beautiful. We loved visiting the fortresses and castles, and Brasov is a beautiful charming small city that you will not want to miss.
We are so glad that we took this tour. Highest ratings for Unzip Romania and our wonderful guide Gaby.

We (a couple) took the Unzip Romania private 6 day tour in early June (2018). However, we didn’t follow the itinerary as laid out on their website. We had limited time and were also restricted by our flight schedule. Unzip Romania, and our guide Gabriel Florea, were fantastic in their flexibility to accommodate our requirements. We were picked up at the airport on arrival and taken back to the airport with good time for our departure and actually did the itinerary in reverse. While a private tour costs a lot more than a group tour, this sort of individual care is only possible on a private tour, and was abundantly worthwhile.

Gabriel is a mature guide who was born, grew up, and still lives, in Bucharest. He has seen his country change from the Communist era to its present progressive outlook. Educated as a historian, and with years of experience leading large bus groups to a couple such as ourselves, he has an intimate knowledge that he is able to share in fluent English and with humour. Gabriel is obviously proud of his land but at the same time doesn’t gloss over the harsh times both ancient and modern and the challenges still being faced in modern Romania.

The tour itself includes some stunning sites, many of them going back many centuries and most of which we had no knowledge of beforehand. I won’t talk about these as they can be seen on the Unzip Romania website. The only one we didn’t like was the one which is the most popular for most tourists, and that was the Bran Castle. The castle itself is spectacular and but it is now associated with Dracula. Before Bram Stoker’s horror novel on Count Dracula, and the association he made with Bran Castle, it would have been a highlight to visit. Even though it is total fiction and the castle has nothing to do with a Dracula idea, people flock to it in droves, and visiting it involves the long lines and constricted movement one would find at Disney, and while in normal circumstances we would have loved the visit, for us it was as horrifying as Dracula himself. It is only worth visiting if you are interested in some of the key historical Romanian figures of the past.

We highly recommend Unzip Romania and in particular have high praise for our guide, Gabriel.
