Having spent a good bit of time in Guatemala, I have come to enjoy the typical food offered to fit a tight budget. To my great surprise, I was directed to Cafe Opera by a local when I asked where to find an Italian restaurant in Antigua. I was greeted warmly and attended to with the professional grace of a staff who know the value of customer service--the owner even changed the TV to basketball so I could check the score of an NBA game. The restaurant is comfortable and attractively fit, and the food was a delight: I had arugula salad lightly dressed with olive oil and raspberry balsamic and shaved parmesiana and it was perfect. My entree was shrimp alfredo on linguine that exceeded my expectations by a mile, easily the best Italian I have had in Guatemala, make that the best meal I have had in Guatemala. Dessert was key lime pie, again perfectly done. From start to finish, everything was right about the meal, the ambience, and the service. To top off the experience, the price was considerably less than I had anticipated. I cannot say enough about this place. If you visit Antigua and want a taste of Italy, go here. You will not regret it.
