Simple but absolutely fascinating and humbling exprience in LP. You take a couple of hours to just understand what it takes to be a monk, told by a former monk who will do its best to explain with passion the way of Buddha, its challenges and its purposes. A calming and charming walk in the temple and an eye-opening experience, way better than the usual touristy activities ont can make here.
Very informative tour! Alex was very knowledgeable and provided a great insight into the local culture. Highly recommend!
This is a great tour which gives wonderful insight into the lives and practices of Buddhist monks and novices. It was fascinating to hear personal insights from our guide Alex, and he also gave us plenty of time and opportunity to ask questions. I’d really recommend this tour for anyone visiting Luang Prabang, it gave us a deeper understanding of the rituals and customs that we saw on our trip. Thank you Orange Robe Tours
I’ve been in the travel industry for 35 years and would like to suggest a few improvements to Luke and Orange Robe Tours.
First I love the concept of a tour that visits a temple to learn more about Buddhist beliefs.
Our tour started in the parking lot of a temple. Our guide was 5 minutes late making us wonder if we were at the correct meeting place. Once everyone introduced themselves we still in the parking for 1/2 hour talking about Buddhism. It would have been good for our guide to review what we were doing during our 1 1/2 hour tour.
I finally suggested we move to a shaded spot that was quieter ( trucks and motorcycles were coming and going making it hard to hear our guide) and where we could sit down.
We asked questions and talked for another 1/2 hour when I finally asked about when we could go in the temple . We were told it was closed until 4:30pm and we could not see the inside. Why offer a tour that describes visiting a temple when it is closed?
We asked questions for another 1/2 hour until we had run out of things to talk about. I don’t think our guild had any outline of what topics he wanted to cover in the tour. We directed the conversation based on our questions.
Overall it was interesting but if I had not suggested we move to a quieter spot I’m afraid we may have stood in a parking lot for 1 1/2 hours. I’m disappointed we never saw the inside of the temple or learned anything about its architecture.
Lastly the booking engine on your website did not work. I ended up booking the tour on TripAdvisor.
You have a great concept but need to work more on the delivery of your product.
Dear Mark,
While I have sent this to you in an email I wanted to post this response online for all to see, as feedback is incredibly important to our small business.
Firstly, thank you for the review. Feedback is how we improve, and we appreciate your thoughts and the time you spent sharing them. I wanted to share some of the steps we are taking to address the issues you raised.
- Undergoing immediate further training for all our guides - Your guide is relatively new the the tour guide profession and we will provide additional training to focus on the small but crucial details.
- Updating the website to provide further information about what not to expect on the tour - I have updated the website to include a note about the recently increased government restrictions of access to the Aram, the central prayer hall, “Due to government restrictions on tourist activities on temple grounds we can not guarantee access to the Aram, the central prayer hall.”
- We have been experimenting with 90 minute tours and have decided to go back to our original 60 minute format - based on your’s and other people’s feedback a more streamlined 60 minute tour (at a lower price) provides a better experience for everyone.
Finally, we are sorry that the booking system on our website wasn’t working for you. This hasn’t happened before, to our knowledge, and we are investigating it to ensure no other customers are affected. The only way to make an official booking should be directly on our website.
Once again, thank you for your feedback, we are always striving to give our customers the best experience.
The tour and guide was okay. Somehow we had the impression before booking, that it’s suitable for kids, and that you experience the temples behind the scenes. However it turned out to be rather a classic sightseeing tour of the public parts of the temples, yes, with much better explanations of the life of monks, but at the end not so special as expected. For our 3 kids age 6-10 not suitable at all, they felt bored after 15min. The guide did not interact with them, he was just monotonously talking.
I could recommend the tour if it’s your first time getting in touch with temple life in South East Asia. For us that have lived in the region, and visited Luang Prabang already 2nd time, there were limited new insights, and as mentioned, not suitable for kids. Total family costs of 70 USD are overpriced compared to other activities in town in our opinion.
Sabaidee, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we're truly sorry the tour did not live up to your expectations.
While we don’t advertise our tours as being suitable for children, we have taken your feedback on board and included a note on our website to make it clear that our tours are primarily aimed towards adults. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we hope that this will help future customers.
With regards to pricing, our tours are carefully priced to ensure we pay our guides a fair, dignified wage. Our prices also ensure we are able to give back to the temple and local community. I hope this provides some clarity into our pricing.
We booked a tour with Orange Robe Tours and we loved it. We met Alex, our guide and a former monk, who offered us a unique experience to meet and better understand Buddhist traditions and life in the temple, through his knowledge and own experience. It was really interesting. We would highly recommand it.
