Most people in this world are Chinese. One out of every five people on the earth live in the People’s Republic of China. I fully understand that foreign, by definition, means strange but I was treated at this hotel like I was a creature from outer space. The problem must have been my suit, leather shoes with matching solid black socks and my black leather jacket. Workers here acted like they had never before seen anyone who could remotely resemble a foreign businessman. Anybody with a couple of extra bucks in his pocket would never have even checked in.

Stuck here by China Southern Airlines because my outgoing flight was cancelled, I had no choice but to stay as I do not speak Chinese well enough to express my needs. I had the money to go elsewhere but was concerned about not being made aware of my rescheduled flight had I gone back to the airport on my own.

I have a lung problem and, for health reasons, cannot be around somebody who is smoking any form of tobacco. When I checked in, I was given a room card but not told that I would be entering an occupied room. The expectation here would be that I would occupy a single bed in a shared room. I was not told. When I opened the door, the room was filled with cigarette smoke. A Chinese man was in the room and he was smoking. The air in the room immediately burned my lungs. I am not placing any sort of blame to the man who was smoking. As a guest in the hotel, he was certainly entitled to smoke in his hotel room. I, however, as a guest in this very same hotel did not feel it was an unreasonable request for me to be lodged in a room without cigarette smoke. I went down to the front desk to complain and staff there, who could speak only minimal English, were dumbfounded. One of the two young front desk clerks had obviously just come in from his own cigarette break and the fact that I do not smoke was a matter of true curiosity to these workers. When I insisted upon being lodged in a private room, the second clerk simply said “lailailai he jiu” (“come on, come on, come on, let’s drink wine). Obviously familiar with the condition of his hotel, his advice to me was really saying that one would need to be passed out drunk not to notice the awful condition of the rooms. This property should be condemned.

Sheets had not been changed before my arrival, nor had the towels. The carpet had likely never been vacuumed, let alone shampooed. The toilet was filthy but the shower was clean and there was enough hot water and pressure so that I was able to shower.

Breakfast was complimentary and, while the carpet in the breakfast room was beyond filthy, the banana bread, fresh seedless watermelon and hot coffee served on the buffet were terrific. No staff member even glanced my way in the breakfast room. Their embarrassment in working in a dump like this was likely the reason why.

China Southern should be embarrassed for insulting their customers by lodging them in this hotel. It was over an hour each way to get to and from this hotel by bus. Surely, there must be a closer and cleaner choice of transit hotel available. I, however, won’t need to worry about it in future as I will never fly China Southern ever again.

This hotel is rapidly deteriorating having stayed here once before. A leaking bathroom ceiling, faulty door lock and appalling choice for breakfast (not to mention dirty table linen) will make this my final stay here. The decor is outdated, furniture scruffy and bathrooms feel shabby. The location and decent internet speed (for China) were the only positives.
