This is definitively the best hotel of our trip in India.

We arrived to Udaipur planning to stay just one night but we decided to extended two more. The first reason is the city itself. It is such a special place.....

The second reason was this hotel. The lovely and clean rooms, the view to the lake, the roof terrace restaurant, the beautiful decoration of all the facilities and the friendly staff makes it THE place to stay. The only negative would be the lack of Wifi connection despite being advertised....But, to be honest, who needs Internet when you're in Udaipur (Internet cafe is just next door - and of course, it belongs to the hotel....)

We would definitively recommend this hotel to everyone who goes to Udaipur.

Pros - location (near shops and restaurants and on the lake), restaurant serves really good quality food at reasonable prices and is very busy so make a reservation ahead, breakfast was good, spectacular views of the lake, rooms were beautifully decorated Indian style, bedding was comfortable, good water pressure in from shower

Cons - there is free wifi but not in the bedrooms, you have to go to reception for wifi, not enough english channels on tv

We booked a Pichola Suite to take advantage of the lake views and absolutely loved it. We stayed over Diwali, so we were able to enjoy the bright lights and fireworks from our room. The room was clean and large. After having just been in Pushkar, we took full advantage of the restaurant's selection of wine, beer and meat! The location was great for exploring Udaipur.

There seemed to be quite a few tour groups using the hotel which was the only downfall. Many of them seemed to be too preoccupied with not having a lake view (we booked months in advance to secure ours) to enjoy the beauty and splendor of Udaipur. They also seemed to miss the fact that this was a heritage property and were complaining about the amenities being old. There are much worse things you can come across in an Indian hotel room then having to turn on the hot water and waiting for a bit before you shower.

One tip: From the restaurant we were able to get free WiFi from neighbouring hotels.

This hotel has, hands down, the best location in Udaipur. We stayed in a lake-view room, which had a private terrace. The room was spacious and luxurious. In addition to our king-sized bed, we had a wonderful sitting area where we could watch the boats pass by and see the Taj Lake Palace. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us. When we asked for a travel converter, the man who checked us in actually went to the store and bought us one! No small feat, considering we checked in at 7 am...

Stay at this hotel and treat yourself to the lake-view room. It is worth the extra money. One item to note is that the restaurant serves very "westernized" food - the food was not spicy at all and rather bland.

Room Tip: Pay for the lake-view room. Lake-view rooms on the ground floor have private terraces with sitting...

I’ll start this review by saying that 99 out of the 100 places I’ve stayed at I’ve given very positive reviews but, this is certainly not the case with the Jagat Niwas.

Honestly, my husband and I must have been staying at a totally different place to the one all the other reviewers were staying at or were we just unlucky? From what I experienced, I really do not know how it gets the rating it does.

Firstly the arrival. We were shown to our room at which point the 2 security guards started to turn down our bed - one had the biggest hairiest beard and dropped his facial hair in the bed. The other turned the sheets down to reveal blood. Okay, there was an apology and the sheets were changed but please…I don’t expect any place to have blood stained sheets when you’re paying nearly £100 a night.

Next the room itself. In fact, it was supposed to be a Pichola Suite. Suites are usually the best rooms in a hotel (that’s why it’s more expensive). This was on the ground floor next to the washroom, the bedroom was small with just enough room for the bed - okay there was a daybed in the window (with views over the lake) covered in crazy Indian (totally non matching) fabrics but, after the blood stained bed sheet incident I really didn’t fancy sitting on it. Then there was another room with a wardrobe and a place to put your suitcase - I guess one would call it the changing room?!! The bathroom was as old as the property and again, for £100 a night I expect constant hot water. Nope, there was a water heater which you needed to switch on about 20 minutes prior to showering, then when you're showering you have about 5 minutes of warm water before it started getting cold. The next person then had had to wait another 20 minutes.

The restaurant had a good view but the food and service were average and I’m certainly not sure why people rave about it. The food, service and views at Ambrai were superior and it had bags more atmosphere. As breakfast wasn’t included for the outrageous £100 a night we paid I can’t comment on it. I do recommend you go to the nearby Café Edelwiess for good coffee, cakes and sandwiches. Another good place to eat is a new vegetarian restaurant just outside the city walls called Udaipuri (they also don’t sell alcohol). Okay, you don’t get the lake views but you do get excellent and good value food in really nice contemporary surroundings - the fact that the place was filled with locals (we were the only tourists) is testaments to how good it is.

I was also shocked when I checked out at 6am and had to wake up staff who were sleeping on the lobby floor and behind the desk. It actually says it all about a hotel when they don’t even provide staff accommodation.

Maybe we were unlucky? Maybe our standards were higher but, out of all the places we stayed during our 3 week India trip this was the worst and certainly not the cheapest. We expected more for £100 a night. It’s certainly not worth paying extra for a Pichola Suite as you get no benefit and the views are just as good from the roof terrace.

Room Tip: Do not pay extra for the Pichola suites. Views just as good from roof terrace but without the pigeo...
