6 of us stayed here end of oct/start of nov 2011. We stayed in room NS-05 which was in the block closest to the beach. we paid around $75AUD a night and all i can say is that u get (or dont get) what u pay for. the hotel grounds are lovely and maintained well. the massive construction site next door to the hotel means no peace in the day time (they start at 8.30am every morning). the construction has just started as well so i imagine it will be goin on for a few more months. never actually swam in pool 1 as it was green and murky and smelt very strongly of chlorine. pool 2 was nice tho. the rooms were nothing fabulous. very dark rooms, tired and in need of reno i say. the bathrooms could do with a bit of bleach or draino as they are smelly. There were no complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. There was a huge dispenser of shampoo and body cleanser in the shower.but no conditioner. the huge cement komodo dragon attached to the wall above the tv was a sight to see...weird and kind of disturbing i say. as our room was on the bottom floor and the doors to out balcony didnt completely shut, we had to sleep with insect repellent on as it was a mozzie paradise. the rooms didnt have a dvd player (you had to rent these from the front desk for $4/night with no remote). we rented one on a rainy day. i rang front desk and asked to hire one for the night. they said ‘sure u pick it up’. as it was raining i asked if they could bring it to our room, front desk huffed and hung up, the dvd player arrived within 10minutes which was good. i called the next day for it to be picked up as housekeeping didnt take it with them. same thing happened ‘u drop it off?’ they said. it was raining so i politely said ‘no its raining can you please pick it up’. anyway we ended up keeping the dvd player for free for the rest of our stay as no one picked it up. there was a nice cold bar fridge that was larger than usual. this was good as u could buy a carton of beer and keep it cool instead of goin back to r-mart buying individual bottles. the daily housekeepers were very efficient and cleaned the rooms well however they forgot to leave complimentary water and tea bags everyday...so i was constantly ringing front desk for them.
the breakfast is nothing to get excited about. the first day we arrived for breakfast we walked in with our breakfast tickets (which they deliver under ur door every night for the next day) and one of the hotel staff took them and said nothing....a simple hello please take a seat where u like or where would you like to sit? would have been nice. there’s a toaster and stale bread. the same 2 juices every day. the same 2 fruits everyday...3 if ur lucky on some days. super sweet croissants. there is weak tea or burnt bitter coffee. or u can have burnt bacon, butter rice, potatoes and migorang noodles. so after 7 nights at the hotel we would skip breakfast and have an early lunch elsewhere. the staff are also very reluctant to say hello around the hotel grounds which for me, is something i really do appreciate.
my advice is to pack your own towels. the hotel has a system where u go to the pool bars and when u need towels for the day. they ask for your room no. and then record the codes on the towels. you then have to return them by 7.30pm or u get charged $10AUD for them. anyway they stink of urine really bad almost like the hotel washes them their selves. they are old and ratty. There is no limit to how many u can have so they run out early and u often see people around the pools with a couple of towels each. the reason i say buy ur own/pack ur own is coz u can’t take them out of the hotel grounds. security will stop u at the front and back entrances. u cant take them down to the beach or on a daytrip snorkelling etc. which is just ridiculous! they do ask to search your bags each time u leave then check them on ur way in for explosives. to overcome this: when u plan ur day trip eg. snorkelling go to front reception and ask them to call a taxi for u. the taxi then picks u up at the door and u dont need to have ur bags checked. in saying this tho each security guard is different. some days u could walk down to the beach with ur towel around ur neck and they wouldnt say a thing. other days u wernt allowed ur towel at the beach but once u got to the beach u would see at least 5 other people with hotel towels????
my parents had a bit of an issue with their room at the start of our stay. their aircon was very warm. it was not cold at all almost like having the heater on. they complained and were told that it will be fixed that day. we went out for the day came home and it was no different. they complained again and were told simply that it has been fixed and that is that. dad actually had to raise his voice at front reception and demand it to be fixed. this seemed to work. they were moved to another room opp. from theirs on the other side of the pool. this was just until the aircon in their original room was 're-gassed'. they moved a few things into their new room while the other room was to be repaired. we went out for the day on another day trip. when we got home the room key to both rooms wouldnt work. they went back to front desk and where told that they couldnt stay in their old room anymore because someone else is staying in there. my parents were furious cause most of their things were in the room still. so front desk recoded both keys so that they could get their stuff and then they had to move to another room on the same floor as the original room. my parents were furious all this moving around. they were happy with the 3rd and final room they were put in. funnily enough my parents passed their old room to notice the new couple that were put in there complaining about the aircon. i noticed too when i checked out that there were 2 new boxed aircons in the lobby ready to be installed. My parents are pretty easy goin aussies but they were furious in the way the hotel handled they complaint. Basically lying to them and moving around and in spite, telling them that there were new guests in their old room. this situation could have been handled better.
ive noticed everyone saying 'good location' but i have to ask why.good location in regards to what??? the hotel is on the beach front which is a plus. the hotel is surrounded by lots of great restaurants (favourites was zanzibar and number 66. i highly recommend these!) but thats about it. shopping is the next few streets across, kuta is a taxi ride away and seminyak is reachable by walking either at the start of the day or late in the arv as its too hot otherwise. other than that nothing is in a pleasant walking distance except for dinner.
For me the stay was pleasant (as it wat u make it i guess) but the hotel needs to make a few improvements before i can recommend it or stay there again. These are more variety in breakfast, general improvement in breakfast service (eg. Breakfast finishes at 1030am but they have everything packed away at 10am and u have to ask for it) the attitude of the staff towards guests esp. at breakfast service, around the hotel grounds, at front lobby and the ratty smelly pool towels.
It was hard as well to arrive to this hotel after staying at the Havan seminyak. We paid $110 a night there and my advice is to stay there its great!. The extra $35 a night is so so worth it!
