A charming hotel with good old-fashioned service standards.

Review of Poppies Bali
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Oct 2022
A wonderful memory-lane trip to Kuta was based on this charming hotel with its delightfully old-fashioned service. This is not the five-star hermetically sealed westernised environment that many hotels in south Bali strive to provide, but something rather more in tune with the indigenous heritage of the island and the hotel's establishment in the 70s. The cottages are spacious and comfortable (and the slight smell of hay and the occasional mosquito that ignores the various repellents enhance the character of the rooms), whilst the equally spacious and well equipped bathrooms, with their open to the skies gardens, are all that one could need. Breakfasting on one's private verandah is a lovely way to start the day and the restaurant across the 'gang' offers an alternative, as well as for other meals and a bar. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff ... even loaning me bathroom scales to enable me to check the weight of my necessarily repacked hold luggage! Their friendly but courteous politeness was quite charming. A couple of tips: cottage 27 is in a private and quiet location (even allowing a cat to cautiously creep in and pinch unwanted warm milk from a finished breakfast!); and, book direct on Poppies own website to get a reasonable price but including the breakfasts and transport from and to the airport., all of which may be extra if the accommodation is booked through the discount sites.

We are all more than grateful for such an apt appraisal of what we have long aspired to offer our guests - a little bit of the Bali that was so much more prevalent in Kuta when the Poppies story began almost 50 years ago, and that we feel more than ever is so well worth preserving and showcasing.

I had previously booked another hotel for my stay in the same area. However, upon carful scrutiny of the reviews, I decided to cancel it and book with Poppies. I was really happy to have made this choice. Not only did Poppies live up to the expectation, also the other property which I had booked had a very rundown appearance from outside.

Facts

1. Poppies is located at the east end of Jalan Poppies - I almost touching Jalan Legian. For those who are new, Jalan Poppies is an extremely narrow lane with just enough space for only one vehicle in any direction. This means that if you have to hail a ride, you'll have to walk down to the main road
2. It's a good 10 min walk from Jalan Pantai Kuta - the main road along the Kuta beach. This would mean that every time one wants to go to the beach, it's a good walk
3. The hotel has stand alone cottages (around 15) comprising of one room with a big semi open toilet and a bath area. There is a small nice verandah along each cottage. The entire property has a serene resort feel
4. The hotel has a mineral water dispenser for the guests to refill their flasks provided in the room. Guests who are very picky, would have to arrange their own bottled water either from the hotel room service or from a nearby mart
5. There are a couple of laundries available in the vicinity. I tried the one who had their own washing machines and dryers inside the shophouse over the ones closer to the hotel which would take your clothes to their home (didn't want to take a chance)
6. There are a couple of mini marts nearby which can provide your stocks of beers
7. Poppies restaurant is just a minute stroll from the Hotel - again an open environment

What went well
1. Airport Transfers - My booking was inclusive of airport transfers which was very helpful. Though a print transfer costs approx 10-15 USD each way only, I didn't have to worry at all
2. All cottages are in the ground level. However, privacy of the guests are ensured
3. Rooms were very clean
4. Beds were extremely comfortable. We had an extra bed for my teenage daughter which was also great
5. We had the choice of our breakfast being served in the room. It was a great feel to have your breakfast amidst the natural surroundings
6. They have some of their socket outlets to UK which came in handy
7. With a lot of greeneries, there are mosquitoes too. However, the mosquito coils and mats are provided by the hotel which took care of the same and there was no issue.

Opportunities
1. Breakfast options are limited. The hotel should consider to increase the options
2. Room service is available only till 11PM. Too bad if you are suddenly hungry late at night
3. The tour rates are on the higher side. One can get private taxis at a lower rate inside the lane only
4. We had our dinner on day-1 - found nothing to boast off for the price we paid
5. Toiletries (soap, shampoo etc.) are provided on a refillable basis. The hotel can consider to provide single use bottles instead as it has more classy feel. There was no issue though with the quality of the toiletries

Room tip: Cottages 26 and 27 offers total privacy even when one sits in the verandah

Poppies is very grateful to you for the high rating you have provided, and thanks you for taking the time to provide such a comprehensive review of so many aspects of Poppies and its immediate surroundings. We have taken note of your suggestions for improvements. We'd like to point out that guests do not need to buy their beers etc in mini marts, as we will stock your fridge with with a minimum of 6 cans at a time, for the same price, and this is indicated on the fridge door. We would also like to mention that in our opinion our breakfast choices are in fact quite comprehensive.

Thank you for a wonderful stay! We stayed at the beginning of our Bali holiday and missed it so much that we had to return! From the immaculate grounds to the charming, beautifully maintained cottages, this place is a delight. I’d recommend Poppies to anyone who is looking for a quiet, peaceful, intimate place to stay. Our daughter loved the cats, frogs, fishponds, dragonflies and beautiful gardens. The breakfasts were wonderful too, and we loved that we could have them at our cottage or in the restaurant. Staff seemed happy and were polite, helpful and friendly. I’d recommend a little flexibility regarding late checkouts where possible. The surrounding area is struggling a little, now that the action seems to have moved to Seminyak/ Canggu, but this also makes for a quiet stay. Love the next door rooster!!! Thank you 🙏🏻.

Thanks from the team for such a lovely review! We particularly appreciate your observation that the move to Canggu of much of Kuta's former action has in fact made a stay at Poppies more peaceful. Poppies Restaurant is close by, and the beach is of course still only a short walk away. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

I have been staying at Poppies for more than a decade and love waking up each morning and being able to sit on the porch in my own private garden. Being a small property you are able to get to know the welcoming and friendly staff and feel part of the Poppies family. The pool is in a quiet, tropical setting and lacks the coldness of the pools in large resorts. Pool beds offer privacy and are thoughtfully arranged in groups of two/ three in the beautiful garden area. Cottages are spacious, perfect for one, two or a third can be accommodated. I love leaving the hustle and bustle of the Kuta streets, markets and street stalls and escaping into this serene piece of paradise. The well known Poppies restaurant is 20 metres down the lane, set in tropical gardens. I have eaten here for almost four decades. Prices are reasonable and the menu offers a range of cuisines, although I prefer to choose traditional Indonesian dishes. Poppies is a 10 minute walk down the lane to the beach, to enjoy walking, swimming or admiring the beautiful Bali sunsets. I love my holidays in Poppies, coming home relaxed after a peaceful getaway.

Room tip: It doesn’t really matter what you choose. Each cottage offers the same amenities

What could be more rewarding to everyone who works at Poppies from management to cleaning service than to read or hear about these words! They encapsulate what we have always strived to offer our guests, and it's so satisfying for us all when guests return again and again. Thank you.

In our opinion, staying at this hotel even just for one night, it is the reason to visit Kuta in itself. Yes, despite we are not fans of such vacation options which Kuta suggests, we found Poppies Bali as one of the best places we’ve ever stayed in. We don’t want to copy previous glowing reviews, we just want to join them, confirming that they all true and adding that Poppies Bali is an incredible hotel, where we want to come back (but not to Kuta itself, haha). The only little drawback I would call a small parking space. On the other hand, there is a lovely car attendant on the spot, so he’ll easily help you to park your car, so this tiny drawback didn’t influence our staying at all. Anyway, if you consider getting this place by car, we recommend renting a small car: it will be easier for you not only reach Poppies Bali but get around Bali, either.

I stayed at Poppies again in September 2022, seven years after my first visit. I booked a room directly on the website for about $110 USD per night. While Kuta was still in the process of recovering from the pandemic - many but not all shops and restaurants were open, and Poppies I Lane was still kind of quiet - Poppies Cottages doesn't seem to have missed a beat.

As before, the grounds remain immaculate and the ambience around the swimming pool - with the fountains, flowers, and fauna - was perfect. The staff also remained about as friendly and helpful as possible, despite how difficult the last two years must have been.

The rooms/cottages were still very nice and spotlessly clean, as well as being spacious. But don't expect an ultra-modern feel in terms of the rooms - these are styled after traditional Balinese homes. Even so, some of the decor and furnishings feels a bite dated and a re-fresh at some point would be nice (which is the only non-effusive thing I can say about Poppies).

In short, if you are staying in Kuta want an excellent alternative to to a traditional hotel, be sure to check out Poppies Cottages.

Dear Velz2, thank you for taking the time to post such a positive and helpful appraisal of Poppies and the staff.

Indeed we do deliberately try to maintain the traditional style of the cottages, which can make the rooms appear dated. During the 2 years of closure we did do a lot of repairing of unseen infrastructure, such as the entire plumbing system including water storage and a new filtration plant. Also drainage, major roof repairs and electrical works, as well as emptying and repairing the pool. During this period we also changed the curtains in all cottages to a new design, changed many of the fabrics, and replaced many of the decorative antiques, while modernising some of the lighting.

We hope to welcome you back again soon.
