Charming tropical oasis

Review of Poppies Bali
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 Jun 2024via mobile
After an extended family holiday in Bali, I finished the trip by treating myself to a couple of nights, solo, in this beautiful boutique property. I wish it had been longer. It was heavenly. Whilst being one of the oldest, original hotels in the area, it has retained all its charm and hospitality that Poppies is renowned for.
The staff were absolutely charming and helpful. The gardens are lush and well maintained, the ambiance is tranquil. The pool is not large but was never crowded. The layout of the cottages are cleverly designed so that they all ensure privacy. The rooms themselves were quaint and thoughtfully appointed..Bar fridge, sound system, TV, safe, desk, hanging space and drawers, hairdryer, kettle. Huge outdoor bathroom with shower and bath recess to step into. It’s covered in netting to protect from bugs/insects. The aircon was sufficient with added ceiling fan but not icy cold. The roof is thatched and therefore has a certain straw smell which didn’t bother me at all but worth mentioning for others to consider. Breakfast was a la carte selection and beautifully presented, delivered to cottage patio or you can dine across the laneway at Poppies Restaurant, also delightful. For late departures, there are small change rooms available with shower/toilet facilities to freshen up before heading to the airport. Added bonus is free airport transfer. I would suggest that this place is ideal for couples or solo travellers wanting to enjoy the serenity, to relax and unwind. I can’t wait to go back again.

Room Tip: Tell taxi driver to enter Poppies 1 from the beach end. The entrance is right near the point...

Poppies was unfortunately not for us but may suit other travellers to Bali.
Free transport to the airport was very convenient.

Pros:
Poppies staff are wonderful, polite, and attentive.
Breakfast had plenty of options and was delivered on time.
The pool was on the smaller side but adequate for the size of the resort, was never bust when we wanted a swim.
The lovely man at the pool deserves a shout-out as he was always helpful, making sure we were happy.
We requested a half day extra as our flight was late in the evening, and Poppies where very accommodating and offered a half day rate, which was appreciated.
Any issues were dealt with promptly.
Poppies is quiet even though they are situated in a busy area.
The gardens are beautiful and plentiful wildlife to watch in the trees.
Room service from Poppies restaurant was excellent and was not expensive.

Cons:
Poppies is an older resort and may not suit you if you prefer a more modern decor.
Our air-conditioning was not adequate for the size of the room. Initially, our air-conditioning was very ineffective, and we let the reception know. They promptly called in someone to service our air-conditioning unit, but we couldn't feel a great deal of difference.
We were only there for 1.5 days, so we just put up with it, but this would unfortunately be the reason we personally would not return.
If you are used to a warmer climate, you may be ok, but we are from a cooler climate, so keep this in mind.
On checking out a staff member was spraying chemicals around the garden and we couldn't avoid breathing it in! It was horrible and was very disappointing, I understand these things need to be done but letting guests know so they can stay indoors or offer masks if stay indoors isn't an option, would be much better, in many other countries guests be evacuated for a few hours while this was happening 😞.
Poppies are situated in a small busy lane, and walking up and down the lane becomes annoying as you are continually dodging traffic or being harassed by the store owners.

We thank you for a comprehensive and balanced review.

We always like to learn of any Cons, so we can take steps to remedy things:
Our apologies regarding the aircon - it is supposed to be better than adequate, and normally is, so clearly our servicing should have had a better result.
You're right that pest control is part and parcel in a hotel set in tropical gardens. We cannot just leave nature to its own devices, as we would quickly become a living jungle. But we do take your point about the need to forewarn guests, in addition to trying always to choose a time that is quiet. Thank you - we will try harder.
Cannot of course do much about the age (and deliberately traditional style) of our property, and unfortunately cannot do much about the traffic on the lane, or the changed spending habits of visitors post Covid, that results in shopkeepers being desperate to sell something.

A free airport pickup and a transfer through very busy Kuta streets ending in the narrow poppies lane 1 we arrived at the lovely Hotel. Nice private walkways to the individual cottages. Plenty of room for 2. Fine open air bathroom (Mandy). Bed mattress was well worn but still comfortable. The grounds are magnificent. Plenty of shrubs and trees and flowers. Superb pool. Very good restaurants nearby. This is THE place to stay in Kuta !

Thanks for a lovely review!
Do need to mention though, that the mattresses are in fact almost brand-new! All of them have been replaced during the past 18 months.

A quiet oasis in the centre of Kuta, honestly once you are inside you could be a million miles away from civilisation. Staff are wonderful, rooms are comfortable and quiet. Air condition works well and the amount of greenery cools the place down. Pool is relaxing and big enough for those wishing to do laps?

Breakfast is nice either in your room or at Poppies restaurant.

Would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to couples or families with older children

We always make Poppies our first and last hotel when staying in Bali. Prefect.for airport pickup & dropoff. Great to arrive and enjoy a cold Bintang on Kuta beach, but clsoe enough to duck out of the Kuta madness as you need. Staff are super friendly.

Thank you for making us your airport transit hotel, and for reminding others to to do the same! We would really love you to spend more than just a night or so at a time with us. Sad to relate that in days of old our average stay was 4 nights! We still offer day tours to many points of interest around Bali, using our friendly and experienced drivers.
