Stayed in the Garden House at Alam Shanti in a 2 bedroom private house; Saraswati and Laksmi rooms. Each floor has a private bedroom and bathroom and open areas for lounging. Saraswati has a large wrap-around balcony with day beds and lounging areas. We are in our mid 30s and travelled with our mother in law, live in the Asia Pacific region, and this was our 4th trip to Bali and third time to Ubud.

Great stuff:
-value for money is practically unbeatable for size of room and service provided
-separate bedrooms on different floors help to give privacy if traveling with family
-Alam Wangi spa is a legitimate spa with separate rooms and very capable therapists - highly recommend Teeny
-always great to have a large breakfast (delivered to your room every morning!) and free wi-fi included in the room rate
-tea, cake and fruit is available in the afternoon which is a nice touch
-Alam Shanti is a quiet area of ubud within easy walking distance to the main areas
-Free transport to ubud area from early am to late pm is very prompt

OK stuff:
-the staff seem slightly exhausted. While they are unbelievably friendly, the number of people coming in and out of the property seems to have worn on some of them just a touch.
-FYI airport pick up is a chargable expense (although some places will include it)

Overall our stay was excellent and we would welcome staying at Alam Shanti again. We've stayed at their sister property Alam Indah (across the way) and will check out the Alam Gili on Lombok island in the near future. The value for money is fantastic and its location within walking distance but in a quieter area of Ubud is ideal. The lush grounds and non-intruding staff make Alam Shanti a peaceful getaway worth its positive reviews.

Wow this place completely blew us away. we arrived two hours before checkin and our room -dewi (pronounced daywee)- was ready. we got a mixed juice on arrival and it was yummo!

Our room-or top half of an amazing villa in paradise!!- has all the luxuries, king size fourposter bed with soft luxurious bedding and mosquito nets. There is 2 day beds, one outside and one inside. There is aircon and a massive beautiful marble bathroom with closets and dressing area. you can actually put toilet paper.in the toilet which is a nice change & no bum sprayer lol.

the breakfast is fruit salad plain or two topping, juice, tea, coffee, bakery items, and a hot selection. all is served on your balcony. The staff are amazing. the grounds are immaculate and there is so much wildlife- we watch the squirrels each morning!!

A 10 min walk through monkey forest motorbike path puts you in Ubud town. there is so many lame tourist shops but also some lovely ones with great non-pushy people. Some great restaurants such as 3 monkeys and Gula Bali on jl hanoman.the infinity pool is lovely and open til 9pm. we booked 10 months in advance to get in here and it was well worth the wait!!!

We have just returned from 9 nights at Alam Shanti - our second visit in just over a year. We really love this place - the rooms are big and comfortable - love the outdoor bathroom in Shindu room. The staff are unfailingly charming and helpful. The breakfast is good and there is plenty to choose from so you don't get tired of the same thing everyday. The gardens are lovely and so peaceful - love the frogs and geckos that hang around the rooms!! The quality of sleep is great - once you get used to the early morning rooster!! The pool is nice and the spa treatments very professional. Really no complaints at all - for the price you pay this hotel is an absolute bargain - we will be back again soon for sure!!

Room Tip: Shindu room has a great outdoor bathroom. Upper rooms have a balcony - downstairs rooms a verandah - both have comfortable day beds for lounging.

We honeymooned in Bali and finished our stay at Alam Shanti (having originally booked there but because AS was full, we stayed at a sister hotel Alam Jiwa the first couple nights). The grounds are amazing and the staff was wonderful. Our upstairs room was incredible, with wraparound windows and more space than we could imagine. The complimentary tea (or coffee) and cake in the afternoon and the big yummy breakfast were great touches too. There were more families and kids than I expected, but they were all very chill and respectful. The monkey forest is near by and the village of Nyuhkuning is still quaint and cute. Their complimentary taxi service into and out of Ubud is perfect - plus it allows you to avoid all the taxi drivers in the city.

One big piece of advice - Ubud is NOT what we expected. The books and sites we read told us that it was a "must-visit" as the "cultural heart of Bali." Perhaps this is the case, but all we saw were lame tourist shops, generic restaurants selling international fare and thousands upon thousands of guys asking us if we needed taxi rides. The experience of walking through Ubud-proper was pretty terrible because of all the soliciting. IF YOU WANT TO VISIT UBUD, STAY IN NYUHKUNING - DO NOT STAY IN UBUD. Or at least that's our advice. Getting out of the cities was our only hope of enjoying the natural and local experience of Bali. The Banyan Tree Bike tour was especially awesome.

Room Tip: Try to get upstairs rooms!

We were 2 families travelling together and we booked Alam Shanti for 4 nights. We had the Indus / Narmada Villa which was better than I expected. I had read all the reviews and looked at the photos of Alam Shanti, but to be there in reality was SO much better. It exceeded all expectations.
We had the whole compound to ourselves, including outdoor kitchen area. The gardens are beautiful and the flowers and water lillies are everywhere.Listening to the frogs call to each other at night while we were sitting outside having a drink was lovely.
There is a free shuttle into Ubud and its only a short walk through the monkey forest to the main street. Our beds were very comfortable, although our friends complained that their bed wasnt ,( they were in Indus which is downstairs ) and after checking, we saw they had only a foam mattress on their bed, while we had mattresses with inner springs. That was a shame, as otherwise they thought it was wonderful. The pool area is so nice and quiet, and we only saw one other couple , who like us, only wanted to relax by the pool.
Only thing I can fault is that they need more glasses and coffee cups and perhaps a kettle to be in the outdoor kitchen as it would be nice to make some coffee or tea when you liked. Otherwise it was perfect, my only regret was I didnt get to stay a bit longer and spend one whole day doing nothing but listening to the serenity !!!!

Room Tip: We had the Narmada / Indus house. We were upstairs as we have 2 children and we found it great, lots of space and comfy beds. Our friends were in Indus and it was very spacious but the beds were not comfortable as only thin mattresses.
