“A great place for a quick lunch”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

We did not stay at the Galle Fort Hotel but went there to have a quick lunch. It was a good choice because we got to sit on the verandah of an old colonial bungalow, overlooking a beautiful, well kept garden and swimming pool. The service was quiet and friendly and the food we ordered was good. They accommodated a request for a vegetarian option on one item on the menu, even checking if cheese was acceptable !
I'm glad we went there. We could cool off from the intense heat and sun outside but not in a sterile air-conditioned place.

If you ever go to Galle this is a place you must try and stay at if you can get in. This hotel has only 12 bedrooms for clients. It is in Church Street and from the outside does not look up to much but inside it is a totally different story. We stayed in a Garden room complete with 4 poster bed. Step outside your room straight into a lovely pool surrounde by beautiful shrubs and trees. This hotel only does B & B but you can still dine there in the evenings. It is worth having an evening meal here as the food was excellent. The hotel is an oasis in the midst of the bedlam which is Galle

This is an ideal place from which to explore the nooks and crannies of Galle Fort. Based in old warehouses Romans face onto a good sized outside swimming pool and there are verandah s for some of the rooms/suites. The rooms vary and the ones on the swimming pool level have large windows complete with window shutters. Furniture is antique and mat require some careful handling. WiFi works.

The staff is superb. One of the managers was very kind to us. Breakfasts were excellent with coconut pancakes a highlight. Fruit and juice were available. The bar is on the front and there is the option to people watch outside or lurk inside. It is best to dine out not because of the food quality but rather to take advantage of the great restaurants.

GFH has been restored in keeping with tradition, it is old style colonial. They have a photograph album of the renovation. staff are very friendly. the loft suites would not be suitable for any one who has difficulty with stairs, as the bedroom is on a mezzanine, but still lovely all the same.
the grand apartment 1/2 is fabulous with a shared sitting room, and is the whole of the upstairs of the oldest part of the building. Lunch time they did jumbo prawns which were excellent. At night sit in the veranda and watch the world pass by down church street. We had a meal in the Amangalla
just up the road, but still thought GFH had more character.

Room Tip: We had grand apartment 1 and it was excellent. Large bedroom and bathroom, outside seating on the ve...

Three nights in the Library suite. Very much enjoyed our stay. This historic property is ideally located within the city of Galle, down one of the wider streets. Having walked Galle in detail, I can’t think of a better location in the fort. Very pleasant room, spacious and light, particularly enjoyed the seating area. Staff very pleasant and made us feel very welcome, the front verandah bar a good place to relax with a beer or two. We did not eat main meals here, but breakfast was adequate and well cooked if service a little tardy.

The pool itself is very good, good size and depth, by nature of a small property there are limited beds around the pool although this was not a problem whilst we were in residence and the hotel was full. Nothing really to find fault with, an really enjoyable stay. As a tiny point, like all boutique properties of this type the antique room furniture is charming and adds a lot of character, but it must be in good order, a days work for a carpenter to make sure the wardrobe doors are closing properly, perhaps fix the in-room safe to something etc would not go amiss. I I cannot imagine I would look elsewhere when I return to Galle.
