If you're interested to find out why Alexandria Bay exists or the boating history of the area you must stop by the Cornwall Store. The original general store (the Amazon shopping of the gilded age) this is a wonderful view of the past. Changing exhibits let you return often and learn something new each time. Check out the evening history talks by locals during the summer.

My husband and I really enjoyed this museum. It is quite small, but as long as you show up with realistic expectations, you will thoroughly enjoy your visit.
First of all, the price is right -- free or a donation.
Second: We only had 90 minutes to spend there and it was not enough time, so don't let the size fool you either.
Third: There is a lot of information here, but it was difficult to take it all in. Some of the descriptions at the displays were lengthy. There were oral histories to listen to at a computer station. There is a video to watch. But mostly you just READ.
I liked that we were able to touch some of the displays and that it wasn't all behind glass. I especially got a kick out of looking at numerous stereotype pictures. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon. I wish we'd arrived sooner so we didn't feel so rushed.

When walking around town we came upon the museum. The original architecture is mostly intact and the building is charming. We were up on the Bay for a boating vacation, so this provided a great kick start to that. The staff was knowledgeable and the view of Boldt Castle was phenomenal. Great little spot for a rainy day or before boating.

Stopped by in the late afternoon and fully enjoyed the museum items and local history write ups. Lots of great photos and memorabilia. Outstanding view of Boldt Castle, which is just across the river. While looking out the upstairs windows, we watched huge container ships pass right in front of our faces. Wished we'd had more time here.
