Owner description: Built between 1399 and 1404, this was one of the Islamic world's biggest mosques which crumbled for centuries before collapsing in an 1897 earthquake.

Although Lonely Planet describes it a bit negatively, the book is not current as restorative work has made it better than it was.
1. Important
2. Large area-nice grounds
3. Interesting to compare with what was across the street

Legend goes that Tamerlane's favourite wife built this as a tribute to him but the sneaky architect demanded a kiss before he would finish it. She allowed this and her husband found out, what happened next is shrouded in history but the mosque is well worth a visit. Again it has the nice blue dome and interesting tiling.

It's famous, huge, and right next to the traditional bazaar. Yet, this is not as beautifully decorated as Shar I Zinda or the Rajisan Square.
It's still top 10 places to visit in Samarkand though.

Just a normal mosque, we expected it to be more impressive, but it is not in the range of Rajistan Square or Shar i Zinda complet. Anyway worth to visit.

Beautiful building, though not properly restored. There are tiles falling off every day and some very serious cracks. It does add to the history and charm. Well worth visiting along with all the other amazing sights in Samarkand. The market is right next door.
