Thank you to all the Trip Advisor reviewers who wrote about the Elephant Cafe in Livingstone, Zambia. I would not have found this fabulous place otherwise. I can't say enough good things about the experience! The speed-boat ride was fun and exciting; the elephant encounters were magical; the three-course meal (plus drinks and hors d'oeuvres) was excellent. All in all, a fabulous experience and one I would highly recommend. Don't be put off by the price ($230); it's worth it. Anyone who loves animals and doesn't want them to be exploited will enjoy the experience of feeding the animals. An awesome experience!!

My rating is only about the food. I come from a very rich gastronomic country-Peru- so that’s the only reason I didn’t rate it excellent!!

Whilst visiting Livingstone and Victoria Falls, Zambia, my family and I treated ourselves to an amazing experience, co-ordinated and booked by Bushtracks Africa. 7 of us were collected by a jet-boat, of Zambezi Marine, from the David Livingstone Lodge & Spa. With a safety brief, life-jackets and a bottle of cold water in hand, we zoomed up the river for the 10 kms to our destination. On route our local driver/guide demonstrated his prowess in boat handling, skimming up rapids and squeezing through narrow foaming gaps in the rocks. He occasionally slowed to point out animals and birds on both sides of the river. Some 30 mins later we arrived at The Elephant Cafe. What an incredible sight, lined up just above the jetty were 5 elephants standing free in a line with their handlers. There were two Mum's, a little 4 year old and two enormous tusked males.
We were introduced to the handlers and their charges and invited to feed them with the provided meal from canvas bags. What a treat to stand beside these wonderful beasts and fill their waiting, probing trunks with handfuls of dried food. If you were really brave you could throw food into their open mouths, making sure you weren't too close to the boys' tusks.
After half an hour, we retreated a short distance and the handlers called the rest of the resident herd, who charged and waded across the river from a nearby island to arrive in front of us to scoff the treats laid out in front of us. There were over a dozen beasts ranging from a wee baby to massive "Bob" a 45 year old male.
After washing hands and changing quickly we were greeted into the impressive, canvas covered restaurant, large enough to accommodate our large party and several more. With a welcoming drink and entrees we sat on comfy sofa's until our table was ready.
The 3 course meal was a gourmet's delight ! A tangy starter, a delicious river fish in sauce main course, followed by everyone's favourite "Zambezi Mess".
The meal was washed down with a selection of lovely South African wines and was beautifully served by an attentive, efficient and professional team of waiters, sommelier and barista.
Though costly, the whole experience was totally worthwhile, with a variety of novel and fascinating experiences topped by a delicious meal. Many thanks Elephant Cafe.

Livingstone came at the end of our Botswana safari holiday and the Elephant Cafe was the dining experience of the trip. We were collected from our hotel and taken to the speed boat for an exhilarating ride over the rapids up the Zambezi river, hippos and crocks abounding, to the cafe situated on the banks. Three elephants and some vervet monkeys awaited us along with our delightful hosts. We were able to touch and feed the elephants after some instruction. The experience was magical. Drinks, canapés and a fine meal were prepared for us from local ingredients and a very special and memorable evening had by all. Thank you.
