Great hotel experience and onsen

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Oct 2012
The family stayed for 3 nights recently.

1. Interiors and room

- The hotel entrance and lobby were modern and sophisticated looking
- Room was a bit tight for the twin that we were at, but was nicely placed with the required amenities such as LAN cable, tv, working desk, coffee making facilities etc(the coffee cookies were a hit!)
- Requested for non-smoking room but understood schedules were packed and they had no choice but to put us on a smoking floor. This is not so good since we had to call the front desk to request for change, and the best they can make do was to come up with a room deodorizer and helped to open the windows. Given the fact that we were staying for 3 nights, I would have expected at least some effort to offer a transfer on the 2nd/3rd night where available. This option was never tabled by the hotel despite me bringing it up to the hostess

2. Location
- Huge plus. Located right next within walking distance to the red brick warehouse
- Well-reviewed restaurants were just opposite the hotel
- 5 mins drive to JR station
- 5 mins drive to morning market

3. Onsen
- Major plus. Hakodate was the last leg after we swept through major onsen towns (we stayed in onsen hotels mostly, other than Sapporo) and the onsen, though very crowded during peak hours (say 9+/10 - you can literally see naked women queuing up for their turn at the bath stalls), was well designed.
- Good variety of hot baths, including the outdoor hot bath with a nice view and the panaroma sauna which was way cool
- And please, try the complimentary lolipop ice creams at the rest area near the onsen : )

4. Breakfast
- Major plus. We purchased the breakfast package. The buffet was delightful, with a good spread of seafood (both quality and quantity).
- Fish roe and raw sashimi were in abundance, and the other cooked items/baked items were deightful too

Arrived on the 7th Oct and checked out on the 9th Oct 2012. Location as reviewed by others is central and easy access to many places of interest. Room with a view of Mt Hakodate was simply magnificent. Staff is generally pleasant but too business like. You ask, they answer.
My stay was otherwise great until we were hit by a bill for using the onsen which we did not. Of course I refused to pay as we did not visit the onsen. Initially, the front staff was quite adamant until another staff intervened. She went into the office and came waving to her colleague to withdraw the bill. There was no apology for either and that really left a bitter taste with us.

Overall, we had a pleasant enough stay at the hotel given the proximity of key local attractions. However, it is not somewhere we would re-visit. The first impression upon entering the hotel was a strong whiff of cigarette smoke due to the placement of the smoking area. Same when we came down to the lobby in the morning. The room had a good view of Mt Hakodate but was very cramped and we had trouble getting in/out with the buggy. Furthermore, there was no room service (drinks machines are available, though), no in-room DVD player and the furnishings were looking a little worn. Most surprisingly of all, we had to queue just to get into the restaurant for breakfast in the morning. Make sure that you get there between 6:30 & 7:00 otherwise you could have a lengthy wait. As I said, all in all we had an enjoyable trip. But felt that overall quality was average and more so than other hotels we have stayed at La Vista Hakodate Bay is clearly geared towards turning over large volumes of customer traffic.

Dear Jeremy O

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
We are sorry to hear that your stay at our hotel did not meet your expectations.
In your review, you state that you were not impressed with our placement of the smoking area.
I will definitely tell the hotels general manager our next meeting and hopefully we can move it to a move suitable location.
We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the view of Mt.Hakodate.
It is a special place.
We are sorry that we don't provide room service or in-room DVD players.
However it was possible to have a DVD player in your room if requested, as we keep some at reception.
We also have to apologize for making you wait at breakfast.
Our breakfast is well renowned in Japan and is one of the main reasons our guests stay with us.
As a result, when our hotel is full, the breakfast room is extremely busy.
If you choose to saty with us again I hope your stay better meets your expectations.
Thank you.

5star hotel at the best location in Hakodate. You can easily walk to the bay, redbrick warehouse, morning market. Hotel is world-class offer with great services. There are 3 onsen for women. 1 outdoor and 2 indoors for you to experience. The room is clean with modern and traditional arrangement. We really had a great time stay here. Highly recommend for everyone!!!

I read the reviews and immediately decided staying inthis No1 rated hotel at Hakodate. But the price is 2.5 times that of another hotel I am staying for the first night. Actually if not fo rthe stiff price I would love to stay 2 nights. All said it was worth every cent we paid. The location is great - 5 minutes walk to the famous warehouse shopping and dining waterfront area. Great view from our room of the warehouse, waterfront and city. Onsen is fabulous - all pools be they inside or outdoor have full view of the city and ocean. Even the sauna has a panaromic view - the first I ever seen. Sitting there sweating it out with the full view of the city before me. the Onsen was so good, relaxing and calming, we went in three times to get three different views of the city - evening, night and just before breakfast. Going just before bed was especially good for sleep. Oh, I lobe spa with chilled water pool and this Onsen is complete!!! I will be back soon! During winter I hope for I have seen some great pictures of Hakodate during winter. Oh, this Onsen is the best after comparing with those I visited at Osaka, Kinosaki, Noboribetsu and Hakodate! So pay the price!

Room tip: Ask for a room close tithe ocean and on high floor! So you get a great view. Buy some wine from your trip out because that's goes damn well while you watch the sunset from our room! Otherwise just settle for the freshly grounded coffee from the room's coffee grinding machine.

Stayed here for 3 nights, very good hotel, impeccable service. They gave us a room facing Mount Hakodate, so every morning we are faced with a fantastic view when we woke up. The windows occupy almost 80% of the wall so. The view is just fantastic.

Opted for rooms only package so did not get to try the food within the hotel.

For the public onsen, not sure if it's just me or the water looked slightly green n slimy.
They have both have indoor and outdoor onsen on their 13th floor, and they all have great panoramic view of Mount Hakodate.

Will definitely return...

Room tip: Get a room that faces Mount Hakodate. Worth it for the morning view.

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the great view of Mt.Hakodate from your room.
Its a shame you didnt get to try our breakfast buffet, it really is delicious. Hopefully, you can next time.
I would also like to tell you more about our onsen. The water is a browny color, but we can assure you that the water is not only clean, but also very good for your skin and body.
We are looking forward to serving you at La Vista Hakodate Bay, again.
Thank you very much.
