Originally we had only booked one night at this hotel, but we changed out plans two weeks before leaving and decided on a second night in Hakone. As a result we ended up with two separate bookings and two different room types.

Our first night we booked the traditional Japanese room with private onsen. The room was massive and had a separate sleeping area and living area. It could easily fit 6 people in minimum. The room had a private Japanese garden off the living room and you could see Mt Fuji when standing in the living room. Bathroom had a shower & bath, with a separate basin. The toilet has it’s own basin above the cistern and bathroom slippers are provided. The fixtures and fittings in the bathroom were outdated, but were still functional and added to the charm of a traditional room. We didn’t use that bath/shower so can’t comment on that as we used the shower in the room next to our private onsen. No issues with the water temperature or pressure here as it was up to standard. Our onsen is surrounded by high walls, so there is no view, however it ensured maximum privacy. It was to perfect way for us to relax after a long bus trip from the the North side of Lake Kawaguchiko. The room had complimentary tea & snacks to enjoy. After we returned from dinner (included in our room rate) our futons were already made up so it was nice that we didn’t have to do that. The dinner was one of best Buffets I’ve ever been too. There was a good balance of western and Asian cuisine. I had the best tuna sushi I’ve ever tasted here. The dessert bar was amazing! Overall there was something for everybody and they had trays that made it easy to try small portions of everything. For breakfast, the cuisine was very Japanese heavy, but you could still have toast, fruit, & pastries for breakfast along with some leafy greens.

For our second night we booked the Asian style twin room with open air bath. The room was very morning and reminded me of an upscale Balinese hotel. The twin beds weren’t your usual sized twin bed, but were the size of doubles. The room was a large size and has a large private terrace with shower facilities for your open air bath. They also provided onsen salts for your bath so you had the same benefits to using an onsen. From the edge of the bath/terrace we also had a view of Mt Fuji.

I used the public women’s onsen on our last morning. Facilities were very clean and there was plenty of lockers available to store my clothes. There was both an indoor & outdoor onsen. The outdoor onsen has a great view of Mt Fuji, and was the perfect way to relax before setting out for the day. There was plenty of beauty products provided for after your onsen. Outside of the men’s & womens onsens there is a waiting room with a few vending machines.

The hotel is best accessed from the Ubako station on the Ropeway, however if you are at Togendai you can call the hotel and they can pick you up from there. We found the service throughout the hotel to be excellent and loved the facilities & food. I hope to return again one day.

From the reviews I read prior to selecting this hotel for 3 nights, I was expecting to get a very nice, above average hotel. Instead I was vastly disappointed. Many features I’ve come to expect in upper mid-range hotels were missing. A partial list of disappointments were: No laundry services, no bar or lounge opened after 5:00 pm (only important because the hotel is remote and there is no other place to go), inability to control your room temperature (which for us was very hot), and very limited shuttle bus destinations (again, important due to the remoteness of the hotel). Their routine is to clean/make-up your room every other day (unless you make a special request). The rooms are very, very compact. The shower/tub and toilet are so close together the shower is actually controlled through the sink controls and pressure. Meal times were wither 5:00, 5:30 or 7:00 pm – making the 7:00 pm quite crowded. The included Japanese/Western meals are all buffet with only average food quality that is the same every day - so for multiple stay visits, it becomes uninteresting. Food service was only adequate. We often waited until mid-meal to get drink orders served after ordering when we sat down. Lastly, all but one of the reception staff spoke limited English making check-in a “bit sporty” and getting answers to questions requiring a lot of patience. At least the rooms were clean, the staff were pleasant and tried to be cooperative and helpful, and there were nightly piano performances. The hotel’s onsen also met normal standards compared to the others we used during our trip. Instead of staying 3 days, we checked out after 2 and paid the penalty for the third day.

We were able to book the same day. The Mt. Fuji view from our room and from the Oasan for women was spectacular. The buffet dinner and breakfast had many many tasty options and the staff was very helpful.

Room tip: Request Mt Fuji view and expect to pay a little extra (50,000 yen) well worth it.

Very nice property in a perfect location with a view of Mt. Fuji on clear days. The natural hot spring public baths are a plus and makes this a 4+ in our opinion. You should note that clothing is not optional and, therefore, you may not wear any while enjoying the baths. The baths are not co-ed. There is an inside pool and an outside pool. A great way to unwind from the days travels prior to dining in the hotel. Traditional clothing is also provided in your room for you to wear while dining at the hotel. It is worth trying and we enjoyed this as well. Like most places in Japan, there are western and Japanese tourists (but mostly Japanese) Hope you like this place. We did.

Room tip: Some rooms look towards Mt Fuji.

Upsides:
- buffet-style restaurant had some of the best buffet food we've had all trip. Chefs behind the counter were great. Almost every dish was good and there was a mix of Japanese and western foods for the kids.
- Like most everywhere in Japan, the staff were very kind and courteous

Room for improvement: Men's Onsen
- Overall it was rundown and dirty.
- The sauna had the thermocouple hanging from three wires out of the wall with molding, broken wood surrounding the heating element.
- On only 1 of our 4 days was the cold bath operational. No explanation.
- The overall cleanliness was poor - the worst of many visited. The intake vents and AC units were clogged with dust and grime. This place needed a deep cleaning,
- The towel policy is confusing. On only 1 of 4 days was there a bin for the little towels you take into the onsen - is it expected that I will take the hand-towel back to my room, dry it off, and re-use it?

Room for improvement: Hotel Room
- We were in a 'new' room in building 2. The room was indeed refurbished but the hallways were lacking - misfitted carpet squares with stains, tears in the wallpaper, etc.
- For all four nights they parked service carts outside our door which detracted from the ambiance...
- We paid 'double-price' for the room to have our two children included (ages 5/11). Each night they would put pads on the floor for them. I just don't think this should cost the same price as having booked two rooms.
- We were charged a $50/night surcharge to for our views of Mt Fuji even though it was so cloudy and rainy that you couldn't see 100'. I'm not saying the weather is their fault, but they should waive the surcharge.
- The layout of the room was awkward - with sink outside by bed for brushing teeth and door to bathroom that blocks hallway. There was virtually no place to put clothing so our suitcases had to stay on the floor. Just not what I would expect for such an expensive hotel.
- The A/C was not enabled and when it was too hot (even though it was 70 outside) we were told to open the window instead. This was problematic with two kids sleeping on pads right by the window. It make it difficult to regulate temperature in the room.
- A motion-sensor built into the closet light (with no door) would go off if anyone moved in the back 1/2 of the room. With two kids on pads it kept going off. I tried calling for help but had problems with a language barrier and ended up putting a bandaid over half of the motion sensor which fixed the problem.

In conclusion the staff was nice and the buffet rocked, but at almost $700/night I expected much more and would not return.
