My wife had booked this ryokan after looking at various online reviews including positive feedback one from a popular travel blogger on YouTube. What attracted her to this property was that it allowed kids (we have 1 year old) and it appeared to be authentic with lush garden, hot spring bath, and also serves food inside the rooms.

We were in for an immediate letdown upon arrival. The room were were placed in was on fifth floor of another section of building with no direct elevator access. We had to carry baby up some flights of stairs and then walk to another part of complex where there was elevator.

The room itself feels like something from the 1950’s that was never updated to modern times. The room only had heating and ac didn’t work. There was only 1 useable outlet to charge our phones. The bathroom had damp/musty smell. The bathtub looked old with mildew on walls. The ceiling had some daylight led/flourescent lights which made laying in bed to look at phone difficult. There was warning on bathroom sink to not drink the water. First time I saw such a warning in hotel and made me question if water was safe to wash baby bottles.

We arrived at 7 pm and waited until 8 pm in our room, expecting food would be brought to our rooms like the YouTube videos and some online reviews mentioned. When it didn’t come, we had to contact several employees until we could find one who spoke English and let us know that we had to go to dining room to eat. Looking at the fine print, the hotel decides who eats in the rooms and who eats in dining rooms. We could not make a request. We also could not request the raw meats to be cooked. Very inflexible.

The food itself looked very pleasing but didn’t taste very good. There were no substitute items so I had told go ask for bowl of boiling water to cook the sushi since I don’t eat raw seafood. There was a separate a la carte menu but I was too tired and disappointed to order more.

There were mosquitoes flying around in our room since screen on windows wasn’t completelyq sealed from outside.
There is also no place to store any luggage so we left it laying around the room.

The staff were very nice but there was a huge language barrier for us since they couldn’t speak more than a few words in English.

Breakfast had salmon that was extremely salty. I couldn’t eat it. Will never come back. For $400+ I expected much much more.

Stayed in a traditional room, so tatami matting and bed made up on the floor. This is surprisingly comfortable and I had a great nights sleep. On the minus side if you like to read in bed you have to get up again to switch lights off as there is inevitably no bed side light option. Rooms feel a bit dated, particularly the bathrooms. However all very clean and well equipped with tea/coffee making facilities in room plus fridge if you need to use it.

The onsen was very good, obviously I only used the female one but my husband said the male one was good too. There are indoor and outdoor pools in lovely settings and shower area well equipped with shampoo etc. The only minus was that you are expected to use your room towels and unless you can track down any of the chamber maids you can’t get them replaced until the following day.

The food is a bit of a challenge. We opted for the kaiseki banquet. On the first evening it was quiet good fun. Everything looks exquisite and is beautifully presented but some dishes were either tasteless unless swamped in soy sauce, or very challenging to the western palate. Some were also delicious but it was a bit of a lottery. Breakfast was similar and so fine for one day but personally I would have liked the option of a boiled egg or slice of toast instead.

After our second kaiseki experience we ( family party of 5 adults) decided to have a few drinks in the hotel bar. This turned out to be a highlight. The bar itself is very atmospheric, dim lighting and velvet upholstery. Also the option for karaoke so the more beer that was drunk the singing took place with very mixed levels of competence but really good fun.

Finally the gardens are gorgeous and very well tended.

The hotel is very traditional and unfortunately I'm not. The room we received was quite attractive and spacious, but while we dined the 'lounge' room was converted to a bedroom with no powerpoints and rice bags for pillows to go with the futons. This meant a night without CPAP machines which made for a restless night. We dressed up in the provided kimonos (blue for men and green for the women) and joined the rest of our tour group for a traditional dinner. Unfortunately our guide had not been able to arrange a non seafood meal for me and everything was seafood. Fortunately with a little pressure applied the guide was able to get me a piece of crumbed chicken with spinach and rice. Bland it was, but at least I got fed. My wife and the rest of the group loved the many courses that were served and they thought it was excellent. After being told that doing non-seafood was almost an impossibility for this hotel, I was amazed to note as we checked out that the hotel also had a steak house! Breakfast continued the theme of seafood offerings and I was glad we only stayed one night!

We booked this hotel hoping to live an amazing Japanese experience and therefore accepted to pay a high price. Well, apart from the beautiful gardens, nice onsens, room quite clean and staff trying to be helpful, the rest was nothing else but disappointing. Bad smell from the moment you enter the hotel and even worse in the room, stains and marks on the walls of the room that is old and not kept in good shape, old mattresses, old bathroom.
We also booked the Japanese menu that could be included. Well, again, the worst food we had in Japan! No flexibility at all regarding the time you go for dinner, a room that looks like a cheap cafeteria, the food covered by a big napkin that is waiting for you to show up, food that looks and tastes bad, all prepared in advance and waiting to be take. Out from the fridge. Well, we are usually not picky but left the table after 4 dishes to put an end to this nightmare. Even some Japanese guests told us it wasn’t good at all.
To summarize: even at a bargain prize, do NOT go to this hotel. We paid a high price and looked forward to the experience. We ended up running away and feel like we have been robbed.

I may have given four stars if the price wasn't so crazy high (we paid 42k yen including dinner and breakfast).

My husband and I stayed one night, this was our first and only Ryokan experience. The staff spoke enough English to communicate properly with us (some earlier commenters had issues with it). The garden is beautiful and very big. The beds were comfortable, but the room definitely looks very worn with scratches on the wood and the linen showing wear as well. The dinner and breakfast was traditional Japanese fare but the quality and cooking was 2/5 in a country where even the most random street food was so tasty!
