We have been to Japan many times before, but this June just had a few days on our way to Southeast Asia. So we opted for a couple of days in Tokyo and a couple in Hakone. Okada was a comfortable and convenient jumping-off point to tour the area. The hotel is enormous and, while it's true that some areas could use a bit of renovation, we quite enjoyed our Japanese-style tatami room (perfect size for the three of us, would have been tight with four) on the 3rd floor. In particular, our daughter loved little details like a cabinet of slippers, lighting controls that changed both brightness and color tone, hot water for green tea, and new Japanese sweets each day. Our room came with breakfast and dinner buffets -- tremendous variety (Japanese, Western, Chinese), some delicious and some not so much. Overall, really fun to go to meals in robes, try new dishes/desserts, and eat cold noodles for breakfast. Baths on the 8th floor of the hotel are fairly boring (one indoor tub, one outdoor) but have excellent amenities (massage chairs, every toiletry you could need) compared to the many onsen we've been to in the past. My wife did have an incident that was shocking for her, but quite comical in hindsight: a (Chinese) man was naked in the women's bath at 6:00am! He was the only one there so early, so my wife walked in and found him changing, ran out of the locker room screaming to fetch a staff member, who then ran in and berated the man, who didn't understand a word she was saying in Japanese. Anyway, at check-out I received a highly embarrassed apology about the incident. Much better in terms of baths is the onsen a short walk up the hill (they give you a ticket to get free access), which has several lovely outdoor baths with tranquil mountain view. Overall, we found the service acceptably friendly (just to counter some negative reviews) but have no idea how the experience would be for non-Japanese speakers. One element that detracted from a relaxing environment was the presence of numerous (noisy) Chinese tour groups -- I'd say at least half the guests were Chinese. Next time we might try a much smaller place to stay, but we were happy with this visit to Okada.

The onsen was absolutely fine but the rooms were terrible. We stayed in room 1006. There were dark stains all over the carpet, the bedcover had a white stain and the room looked like it hadn't been renovated since the 70's. The room also had a nasty smell that wouldn't go away.

Would definitely not recommend. I'm just happy that I'm only here for one night.

Hakone is the the general area, and Hakone Yumato is the gateway town/transport hub for the area. Hotel Okada is a short walk, uphill and slightly out of town, the "A" bus from the station will take you there for 100 Yen, when you have bags to pull. Otherwise it's a nice stroll.
The town is set in nice countryside but blighted by the usual lack building control and aesthetics. So the Okada being out of town slightly is an advantage, nestling in a river valley you have a wonderful view.......... of the equally large hotel the other side of the river, with which it shares the outdoor onsen.
In general the whole area is simply too close to Tokyo, and is a mass week end escape, loads of punters chasing limited beds equals very high prices, and no need to make an effort.
Aside from the price the Okada is pleasant enough experience, we had a room with beds but also the traditional tatami matted room and an area with sofas and table. So plenty of width however the bathroom was a very jaded installation with low doors and a toilet that would be problematic for anybody overweight or infirm. In fact jaded really describes the place; needs a lick of paint here and there, bits of new carpeting, breakfast room was like a school canteen.
However outdoor onsen was good and the staff were really friendly. The restaurant in the outdoor onsen block is fine if you can't get to town which is a nice stroll there and back. In town recommend 808 Monsmare.

Hotel Okada has horrible customer service. This hotel has no Fuji view and stole money off my bank account.
The pictures don't correlate to the place - false advertising
The staff were very rude 0/5

2 nights stay for onsen. It’s relatively closer to Tokyo, about 1.5 hrs trains. There’s is shuttle bus from Yumoto Onsen station to hotel. Don’t walk as it’s a bit far and bumpy road upslope. The shuttle needs about ¥100 each ride.
The hotel is quite big and large onsen bath with indoor and open air one. The onsen is good but not the best 3 in Japan.
I booked a larger room with private onsen bath in the room. It’s a good room but surely more expensive.
The buffet restaurant is for breakfast and dinner. I stayed in many onsen Japan and I would say that the food is really average and not up to standard. So don’t waste money to have half board meal when booking the hotel. You can dine outside for dinner and save quite a lot of money!
It’s better to rent a car to drive to the hotel and book a private onsen room without dinner included. That’s my suggestion!
