Some of the things that make this inn great for me, might make it the wrong match for you. I was very comfortable and the longer I stayed (only two nights) the better I liked the inn. It is on the banks of the Daiya River and there is the constant sound of the river cascading through the gorge and down the mountain. It is on the edge of town away from the traffic and bustle of people and tourists.

The small Japanese style room had a small (think airplane) western-style bath. I didn't use the shower because the inn has a beautiful onsen (Japanese hot-springs bath) overlooking the river. The onsen has an "occupied" sign and lock on the door with the request that you limit your stay to 30 minutes.

The innkeeper was friendly, was able to communicate in limited English and gave me the inn's map for getting around, which I found a bit more useful than the one I got at tourist information in the train station (although I used both since the information was a bit different on each).

I liked being five minutes or less walk from Ganman-ga fuchi, a path along the river gorge with approximately 70 statutes of Jizo, the protector of children. I visited this area several times and liked that I was alone with the statutes and the river most of the time.

The price was reasonable and you can add a breakfast of fresh fruit, toast, a hardboiled egg, juice and coffee for 1000 yen. (Dinner is only served on Saturdays.)

The quiet location on the edge of town though means lots of walking. The inn is 8-10 minutes away from the nearest restaurants, 15-20 minutes from the sacred bridge where you begin the climb to most of the most-famous sights, 35 minutes or a bit more to the train station. I recommend taking a taxi from the train station to the inn. (I think that it cost about 1200 yen, but I'm not sure my recollection is correct.) The first half of the walk is uphill and the taxi will give you a chance to orient yourself if you follow on the map. After that, I walked everywhere I wanted to go.

All-in-all, I would stay again, but know what you're getting and what you aren't.

Located in a quiet part of Nikko beside the Daiya River. To find it, walk away from the town for about ten minutes, cross a bridge and it is at the end of the road becomes a footpath leading to the row of Jizo statues. It is an incredibly relaxing place to stay. The rooms have traditional tatami mats and beds on the floor. The Yukatas you sleep in are the best I found in Japan and they sell them at reception. Get one ! they are impossible to get outside Japan and are the most comfortable things ever to wear. Highlight was the Onsen. Sitting in a hot steaming bath tub wth a huge window opening onto the river was a brilliant way to start or end the day. Get in there early and book a spot, it is very popular. Also check out what the swiss clock in the breakfast room does on the hour. I stayed as part of an Intrepid trip.

at floor level, which takes some getting use to. They sell the comfortable Yukatas that you sleep in at the desk, I wished id bought one because they were good quality and impossible to get outside Japan.

The Annex Turtle is located in a very quiet part of Nikko, beside the Daiya River. To get there headAbout 10 minutes walk out of town, across a bridge and down to the end of a small road. Annex Turtle is in Slightly out of town

Room Tip: One with a river view.

we stayed in a typical Japanese style room (ryokan style) with beds on the floor and paper windows. the room was cozy, beds were comfortable and the toilet was ok, even if not too big. Nikko is a cold place, and nights were cold too, but the room had an electric stove that heated well the room. what's cool about this hotel, anyway, is the onsen that guests can use for free, even if it's most likely that you'll have to wait a bit for the onsen to be vacant, since it's quite popular among the guests. if you go to the onsen during the day, you'll be able to have a nice view of the river passing close to the hotel. the position, indeed, is a bit distant from the center of Nikko: you'll have to walk for about 10 min. before you reach the main road, but you'll find a convenience store and the bus stop as you get to the main road. the position is quiet, and I think it's worthy not to be on the main road but a bit outside the center of the city. the staff speaks english (which's never an obvious thing to find, in Japan). I strongly suggest the breakfast in the hotel, which's really good.

Very friendly owner/operator. Interesting part of town - easy to access the sites. However, the hostel itself is hard to find when you first get to town. It is quite a way from the station and you have to cross the river twice. It was clean and neat. Private rooms. Very quiet area.

We went to a nearby chinese food restaurant which the owner recommended for dinner. It was quite good.

Enjoyable onsen with a nice view. Can be used by couples with an 'occupied' sign,

Good breakfast.

First went here 20 years ago and it was newly opened with an amazing onsen overlooking the river. It is still just as nice and homey as back then. A bit of a hike from the train stations (JR and Asakusa) but well worth it. Not a terribly long hike to Toshugu and all of its wonders. The trail behind is just great as well. Will not wait 20 years to go back.
