Nikko is very busy in October because of the popular indian summer in the area. This traditional ryokan offered us a great rest by the Daiya river, away from the traffic jams on the main highway. Personnel was absolutely delightful, pretty fluent in english. B&B is very well maintained and was decorated for Halloween. Private onsen was a must and breakfast very tasty. Nearby restaurants were very convenient. What else could we dream of?

Room Tip: ground floor, close to the private onsen

This is not a fancy place, but a very charming simple hotel. The staff are very friendly and polite. My Japanese style room was excellent value. The heater worked very well, the bedding was very comfy. Breakfast could include some more items, but at least you won't overeat. Everything was yummy though.
There is sometimes a queue for the Onsen in the evening as it can be used privately, so it's wise to use it outside the "rush hour".

Hotori-an is a casual minshuku style accommodation in a modern building next to the Daiya River. It's a little away from the main part of Nikko, but well located especially for visiting Kanmangafuchi Gorge and the Imperial Villa and not too far from the World Heritage listed shrines and temples.

Although each room has a bath/toilet, I recommend enjoying the spacious communal bath on the lower level.

Most rooms face the river, so you can fall asleep to the sound of the tumbling water.

I recommend paying the extra charge for breakfast--fruit, bread and a hard-boiled egg as well as your choice of coffee or tea.

Friendly staff, too!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on an upper floor (the downstairs rooms can be a bit musty, especially in the wet sea...

The 2* rating reflects the fact that this is a functional place to stay rather than having lots of amenities, but for what I needed (two rooms for two nights) it did everything I needed it to.

The location away from the main road makes it quiet/secluded. The nearest bus stop is quite a distance, but with a car or a taxi it is quite accessible. The room we had faced the river there was a constant background of the flowing water (which was nice). The rooms were large enough with comfortable futons and the bathroom was a standard (compact) Japanese hotel style.

The breakfast area provided seating if you needed it and while we did not have breakfast at the inn, it was reasonably priced.
A bonus is the spa/onsen. I wasn't sure if it was mineral or fresh water, but it provided a place for a relaxing soak and you can watch the river outside as well.
The Kanmangafuchi Abyss is a few minutes away, and the other Nikko attractions not very far either.

Helpful and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Maybe the 2nd floor rooms have a better view of the river.

This inn is a bit out of town (taxi rides cost us 1090¥ there and 1540¥ return from Nikko JR station) but it is close to the shrines and on the riverbank by the edge of the forest. We had a large tatami room, which was very comfortable, but the room lacked some basic amenities eg tea and coffee making facilities (you could help yourself in the dining area) or a mini fridge (there is a communal fridge available). But there is a private onsen for couples/families which was a big plus, and it is in a beautiful setting being a bit out of town and surrounded by nature. That said it was only about a 5 minute walk to the closest convenience store and about 15 minutes walk from good restaurants in Nikko itself
