Beautiful view, friendly host. Quiet place. Super fast wifi. Highly recommended, just be aware, no kettle and cup inside the room. But there is kettle in common area with beautiful view. Easy to assess tourist place.

Room Tip: Friendly host

Situated on the outskirts of town the Turtle Inn Annex is a great place if you want peace and quiet. A small river runs behind the Annex and out the front door to the right is a beautiful walking path. But there isn't much else to do. There is an onsen but we did not use it. The lobby is small but the breakfast area is open, airy and the breakfast is quite good of an egg, fruit, pastry, juice, and coffee. Rooms are basic tatami style with private baths. Our room had a not-so-good smell and we suspect it was because we were on the ground floor so the plumbing and perhaps sulfur-y smell of nearby springs could account for that. Everything was spotlessly clean. But at night you are trapped with not much to do. There is nothing close by that was even remotely good to eat. Every place we tried was average at best. There are two convenience stores on the other side of the river. Keep your eyes out for deer! We saw a large group of them in front of the hotel!

Room Tip: Get an upper level room facing the back of the property!

Its not luxurious, and feels more like a family owned business. So they sell on service and not amenities.
Its off the main road in Nikko with a 10 min walk.
Its quiet and dark at night so you can get a good nights rest.
If you need tourist info, the staff is more than glad to help.
Rooms and bathroom were clean.
Staff spoke limited english but its enough to get by for most things.
They will hold your bags for a day if needed.
They also have a river facing onsen. So you can relax while facing a calm relaxing scene.
Onsen is also private so you dont have to share it with others.
Go to the onsen during sunrise or sunrise. =)
The Inn is about a 3 min walk to the abyss.

Rooms are traditional ryokan. You're on the floor with mats and futons.
Rooms are well appointed for the price point. It had a table, seating, extra power strips, hair dryer, tv and 2... TWO heaters. That is more than enough to keep you warm on colder nights. Lights and HVAC are all remote controlled. Wifi is fast enough for streaming video.

They serve breakfast and dinner if you reserve. They also have a washer and dryer if you need to wash. Snacks and drinks are available in the dining area.

Room Tip: you can check in in the morning so you can drop off you bags early.

We stayed in this hotel for 1 night in the middle of our trip to Japan, as we wanted to visit Nikko. I am only sad we could not stay here for longer! The location of this hotel is stunning, right by a river and with mountain views. Really quiet and picturesque. It is a little tricky to get to with heavy cases, we were guided by the tourist information desk at Nikko station who told us what bus to get. It was still a good 10 minute walk from the bus stop but the walk itself is along the river and really stunning. Some of the roads are cobbled so wheeling cases was slightly difficult but we managed it! The hotel itself is fairly basic but the lady on the desk was amazing. She took the time to explain what sights there was to see and how to get to them. She then showed us around the hotel. We stayed in a Japanese style room which was really beautiful. The window overlooked the river, what a view! The bathroom was basic but this was the cheapest hotel we stayed in during our trip, I felt it was amazing value for money. The Onsen was incredible! Again amazing views over the river and you are able to use in privately. We paid extra to have breakfast in the morning which was continental style and was decent. There is a couple of convenience stores nearby open 24 hours and only a couple of restaurants. Would definitely stay again!

Hotori An is a reasonable hotel located in a quiet section of Nikko, yet near many sites and attractions, including the nearby 'Abyss.' The rooms are small but clean, and the staff is very attentive. If you're looking for a Japanese experience, then this is not the ideal place. However, there is a hot springs bath, which is very nice. The four nights we spent here, we didn't encounter any Japanese guests. Even the breakfast was Western.
