“EDO wonderland”
Reviewed 7 February 2009

If you have a japanese rail pass and a free day this is well worth it with a few caveats.

1. Get up early. This takes a whole day and 5 hours of travelling from Tokyo.

2. If you don't want to spend a fortune on travelling by taxi from the station ( 45 minutes), then contact the EDO Wonderland office about the curent timetable for their free bus.

3. Their e xhibits are not in English. There is a audioguide and consciderable cost for English Speakers.

4. Bring a packed lunch. The food is very expensive.

“nice throwback to historic Japan”
Reviewed 27 April 2007

We spent an afternoon at Nikko Edo Mura, on a quiet november afternoon. There were very few people in the park.
This is a theme park with mock Japanese buildings and villages, built in historic style.
As you walk through, there are a number of shops selling souvenirs and food items. There is also a shop to get dressed up as a Geisha or Emperor and have your photo taken.
The village also features a couple shows, including a water Geisha show, and a stunt ninja show. These are short, about 20 minutes, but the performers have a great sense of humour and will be happy to take pictures.
The village will also have a number of guest musicians. When we were there, there was a group from Cape Breton island in Canada.
The staff seemed very friendly for the most part, although the shopkeepers did appear to only be concerned with making sales.
The Nikko area in general is very pretty and a great day trip from Tokyo. I'd say it's definately worth visiting Edo Mura for a half day, as the shows are worth the price alone.
