The visitor center is around 10mins walk from the port and is not easy to miss. It is not big but offer a free tour and free viewing session to introduce Sakurajima to the visitors. There are some gifts that you can buy from the entrance to the tour.

You learn a lot about the volcano in Visitor center.

At the entrance of Sakurajima Visitor Center was Ash Art drawn on the ground!

When I visited that day, it was TOTORO, Satsuki, and Mei, the characters of the popular movie ”My Neighbor TOTORO“!

Such welcome makes you feel warmth of the staff at Visitor center!

Must visit while on the island. Short walk from where you arrive by Ferry Boat. Take a walk along shore line path for good views of Sakurajima.

A lovely little visitor centre with lots of easily accessible information for tourists. Many of the information boards were in English as well as Japanese and there is a video with English subtitles that is a must see. Around the centre there is information on how volcanoes form, the history of Sakurajima and how the locals currently live with an active volcano on their doorstep.

We didn't spend long here, around half an hour, but it would take no longer than an hour to do the centre in depth.

There is also a small shop with souvenirs and local produce and toilets.

A great stop to learn more about Sakurajima.

The centre itself is full of useful information and the video they show is worth viewing.

Make sure you go out the back where some paths lead you around the pleasant sea views and best of the volcanic water foot bath. We stripped off our shoes an enjoyed an invigorating bath whilst taking in the views. Something not to be missed and free. Handy if you bring a small towel.
