“Good value - look past the dated decor”
Reviewed 22 July 2011

This hotel is definitely in need of a little updating (think 70's/80's decor) but provides good value and an excellent location.

We got a clean and comfortable double room for about 88 RM (a weekend night), which dropped to around 80 RM during the week. The guys at reception aren't the most lively and welcoming bunch, but not to worry. The room itself was quite spacious, with aircon, and had a reasonable bathroom, all a bit dated, but it grows on you! What we really liked about this place was that it was quiet at night and early morning, meaning you get a peaceful nights sleep away from the noise of the city and early morning markets.

It is walking distance to many of the major sights in Georgetown, and has excellent places to eat nearby (try the Red Garden Food centre).

We would come back here and recommend to travellers on a similar budget.

Well this place looks like it hasn't been updated for a while but for the price it is good value. The reception staff were great, the rooms are big (but basic) the AC is good and it is in a great location.

Basic but spacious rooms (we had a family room in the corner). we stayed with 2 kids, easy access to all the city. The staff is very helpful. We forgot cloths when we left and contacted them 1 month after. They had kept everything and send it back to us in Europe. Amazing honesty very appreciated !

We arrived in Georgetown at 5am after a long journey from Melaka. Stupidly we had not booked a hostel ahead and so spent over an hour walking the deserted streets in the dark looking for a double room. Every hostel we tried was full and so we consulted the lonely planet for their recommeded midrange hotels and decided to try the oriental. The staff were not overly helpful on arrival but they had a double room available for 90 ringgit and we were so tired by this point that we didn't really care. We were shown a "double" room (which was actually 2 individually made up single beds pushed together, that were on wheels so if you rolled into the middle of the 2 you promptly fell down the gap!). We left our luggage in the room and went downstairs to pay. The whole time we were being shown the room the porter was on his mobile phone which I thought slightly odd as it was 6am. I took my purse and other valuables with me when leaving the room. However, my boyfirends left his money belt containing 120 singapore dollars. On leaving the room i made sure the door was locked and as we entered the lift the porter muttered something that sounded like yeh yeh into his phone and then hung up. we went down to pay and then went to bed exhausted. Upon waking the next day my boyfriend noticed his money belt was open and on closer inspection the singapore dollars were gone. They has definitely been there with the zip shut when we had left the room to pay..... we can only assume that the porter had been on the phone to another hotel worker who had entered the room after we had gone down to pay. Upon complaining about this the hotel manager was extremely unhelpful and didnt seem concerned that he was employing thieves. We resigned ourselves to the fact that the money was gone but after this I felt very unsafe in the room and we took our valuables with us everywhere. If I had been travelling without my boyfriend I think I would have left immediately! Saying this we stayed for the time we had payed for and then left.

Asides from this the room was mostly clean. It was freezing cold as the aircon was on way too high and there were no controls to turn it down. I called customer service twice and no one came. My boyfriend phoned a third time and they arrived, pulled a wooden board across the vent and then left! This was them "turning the aircon down".

All in all we had a rather unpleasant stay in this completely outdated unfriendly hotel. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

On returning to Penang we stayed in the Civilians Inn hostel which was a lovely place and I would thoroughly recommend that hostel.
