Super location with 5 star well maintained boutique hotel. Nice breakfast provided in private cafe just beside the hotel. Convenience to access to any attraction in Komtar town area. Friendly Yeng Keng's staffs willing to help to arrange transport to any attraction that we planned to visit. Small pool built inside Yeng Keng could cooling us after a day walking in Georgetown. We stay 2 nite at Yeng Keng before leaving Pulau Pinang. Yeng Keng brings us a sweet memory. Highly recommended to whose like boutique hotel (somethings that you can't find in conventional hotel). Cheers~ YENG KENG!

We chose the Yeng Keng after reading all of the positive remarks on Tripadvisor, and the hotel did not disappoint us. The hotel i beautiful and with lots of character, our kids loved their afternoon swim in the little pool. In general it was a positive experience. Only problem I have is with the taxi service. The staff is keen to offer calling a taxi for you, but the price you pay for the fare is often twice as high as when you hail one from the street and ask the driver to use the meter (that he is supposed to use - but most drivers don't). We ordered a taxi through the reception - the fare was supposedly RB50, but when we asked to use the meter, our final price was on RB26. This kind of 'service' is not in the customers interest.

Wanted to stay two nights but hotel could only give us one night...

Room was very small for the two of us...

Swimming pool was tiny...

Free Wifi was a plus...

Breakfast was good enough...

Location was very good for sightseeing around town.

On hindsight, we were happy to stay for just one night. The tiny room was just too stifling...

Probably will not return for a stay...

The Yeng Keng is a modernised old chinese house in the centre of Georgetown, greatly located next to bars and the famous food stalls. Everything is in a briliant shape, the atmosphere historic, modern and friendly at the same time. Compared to our last stay in Traders, this is a completely different experience that significantly enhanced our stay in Penang

Had a couple of nights here and it is a lovely restored building with lots of character in the middle of a lively old part of Georgetown. Our room (the Garden Room) was large, well equipped and quiet. Breakfast was in their cafe next door and was adequate and there was a lovely swimming pool at the back which was much appreciated after a hard, hot day of sightseeing.
The location was very interesting, being in the heart of the old town with only a short walk to Chinatown and Little India.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Yeng Keng Hotel is a 20-room restored heritage boutique hotel located in one of the oldest surviving and intact 19th-century buildings at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang. Like many of the other buildings in the neighbourhood, it was originally built in the mid 1800's as a private residence. The Anglo Indian bungalow belonged initially to Shaik Eusoffe bin Shaik Latiff an Indian Muslim family and remains unique in Chulia Street for not being relegated to the rear of a row of shop-houses blocking its facade. In 1897 trustees of the Cantonese Club 'Ying Han Pit Shu' bought the building on behalf of the association, later donating it to the trustees of the Straits Chinese Building Association in 1939. The building was later leased to Yeng Keng Hotel. The conversion from a residence into a budget hotel was the prevailing trend along the street at the beginning of the 20th century. Small places of lodgings that were conveniently reached from the harbour were in great demand as the traffic in the port grew. An impressive traditional Chinese entrance gate was constructed announcing entry to the 'Lodging House,' adding grandeur to the commercial establishment and to distinguish it from the rest of the buildings on the street. Conservation and upgrading by the present owner, Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd, was undertaken in March 2009 with the renewed Yeng Keng Hotel completed in April 2010. ... more   less
