I stayed at Sumai Hotel Apartment over the Labour Day weekend. It was a quick getaway with my cousin and her family of four. We booked the two-bedroom apartment and thought what a great deal we got for the period.

It wasn't great. We arrived at about 6 p.m. and although front desk was attentive and friendly, my husband suspected all the good apartments were already handed out earlier. Our unit was on the second floor. We were surprised to find that the apartment did not have ceiling fans and relied on air-conditioning. This would have been fine if they were working, which they weren't. The a/c units were all dusty, dirty and the one in the smaller room had seen better days, definitely.

The lights were poor, only white fluorescent bulbs in the dining/living area and the bedroom lights were yellow bulbs. The smaller room had two single beds pushed together and a wall fitting for clothes was at a bad angle, making the room even smaller. The bigger room wasn't all jazz either with mismatching furniture and drab curtains. To top it all off, the hotel failed my pillow test. No one came up at all to give us extra pillows, not after we called, and certainly not until checking out either.

It wasn't a nice stay for us, even if we were only going to be in the unit for sleep and washing up. The kitchen sink looked as if it was built by a teenager and the cleanliness of the entire unit was nothing to be proud of. The second bathroom had a missing shower head. The water pressure was non-existent.

Admittedly the building is not brand new although the surrounding buildings are. (This then led to noisy motorcycles racing in the middle of the night outside our window!) Therefore the hotel management should at least try to have better maintenance and upkeep to ensure more rooms are booked. The indoor pool is better off heated; as the water is way too chilly to enjoy and kids would rather tear up the shower in their rooms anyway (and if the hot shower worked properly). Do away with the old a/c units and install fans instead. Maybe that would help out with costs.

I won't be staying here again, I'm sorry, and I wouldn't be recommending Sumai to family and friends. If you are thinking of booking because of the indoor pool, stop. That's why we booked too, and we were greatly disappointed.

I stayed at Sumai Hotel Apartment on 17 - 19 March. It was my second stay there: the previous visit was during the Hari Raya break.

Overall, Sumai Hotel Apartment is an average and tired looking hotel/apartment that is in dire need of an upgrade.

The apartments are spacious, but the fixtures in the apartment have past its replacement date. The sofa is smelly, and the tv is from 10 years ago. Even the TV connection to the few cables channels are not clear.

The beds are sinking in the middle and showing sign of wear and tear, while the hot water in the shower come from standalone water heater with very low water pressure.

The only positive thing about this hotel is its location. It is within walking distance to the beach and restaurants such as Manhattan Fish Market and Chicken Cottage.

Room Tip: Room facing the sea.

Second time stay & it's going south! Really badly need an upgrade to the whole place. The apartment is a bit run down, with living room sofa need to be changed. No dish washing liquid offered, although you have a full size kitchen in the apartment. You have to request the room to be cleaned! Its not their standard SOP! The only saving grace, the apartment is good for large family visiting Kuala Terengganu. Location close to places of interests within the city.
