My husband and I spent the first 10 days of our honeymoon at La Residence and absolutely loved it. The location is excellent, on a long beach with powdery sand and transparent turquoise waters free of sea urchins.

The hotel itself has a gorgeous open lobby ( the setting for a number of romantic moments), rambling tropical gardens which we enjoyed strolling in after dinner and elegant public rooms decorated in colonial style. The lobby and the bedrooms all smell of yling-ylang, which will remain the scent of our holiday (we duly bought some y-y oil before leaving).

There are two restaurants, one in the main body of the hotel and one by the beach and on any given night one will be serving a buffet while the other will be a la carte. The buffets were all of very good standard (equivalent to a smart London restaurant), so much so that we went to the seafood one three times during our stay. Breakfast too was amazing and very varied. The quality of the food was exceptional (both of us are foodies and do not say this lightly), in particular there was always a large array of very fresh fruit, vegetables and fish and the style of cooking was tasty and healthy- with the delightful result that after 10 days of lots of very satisfying food both of us had lost weight! We also particularly enjoyed the fact that we could taste local food and local recipes, while international dishes were also expertly prepared (I am in Italian and it is unusual to eat properly made ravioli outside Italy, but the residence ones were excellent).

We stayed in a garden-facing room that was spacious, elegant and extremely comfortable- the bed in particular was so comfortable we consistently slept more than 10 hours a night. The bathroom has a large shower and bath- both big enough for two and the walk-in wardrobe ensures the room remains tidy even when, like us, you do not travel light.

The service was efficient and professional, unobstrusive and discreet, and everyone made us feel not only welcome, but valued (for once, really, rather than as in "You, our Valued Guests", with too many capitals and not enough sincerity).

Our butlers were very very helpful, not only in unpacking and packing (the latter so well done our clothes did not need ironing when they were unpacked at our next hotel, Le Tousserok), but also in running baths (very romantic), providing us with buckets of ice for our duty-free champagne and serving our candelit honeymoon dinner in our room (Do go for this- infinitely better than having it in one of the restaurants with another 4 or 5 couples and all the other guests).

The watersports were also very good- we waterskied several times a day every day and the watersports staff very patiently helped us improve our style. Due to the tides, often it was possible to waterski for only half the day, so we also went sailing and out on a pedalo and again the staff could not have been more helpful.

The other guests were a fairly international bunch (English, French, Dutch, Spanish, a few Italians) split about 60-40 between couples and families with pre-school children during our first week and 40-60 (but this time with older children) during the second week- which coincided with the UK half term. The children were a pleasure to have around (no rude shouting or running around the restaurant) and the kids' club staff seemed to do a very good job of keeping the children amused and happy so that the parents could, if they wanted, have some quiet time reading on the beach.

FInally, the hotel is only about 5 minutes' walk from Belle Mare, so it is easy to go into the village if you wish.

I had researched hotels for our honeymoon very extensively before settling on la residence, and we both agree we could not have chosen better. We also spent 5 days at Le Tousserok, but we much preferred La Residence, where the service was better and the experience less mercenary (as opposed to Le T, where everything was extra, including the tea and coffee in your room!!!).

First two weeks in November at The Residence Hotel Mauritius. It all works. The Suite was excellent, The staff generally efficient and friendly (but not too friendly ) The only hotel to provide breakfast in your room ( On the balcony) for no extra charge and hot and fresh. The bar in the evening is Savoy Hotel London meets The oberoi --simply beautifully done. Restraunt food was Ok but no more. The best restraunt on the island is the398 or similar number at the Touserok (£30 for dinner) fantastic quality . Back to The Residence- great for arelax for 50 somethings or parents with toddler age kids. Give it ago -you won't be disappointed

I've been to Mauritius 4 times so far, and I spent some time in most of the 5* hotels on the island (Prince Maurice, Touessrok, ...). I'm also a quite frequent traveller and I know what you should expect from an hotel belonging to this category...

And The Residence is still one of my favorite hotels worldwide.

The design is pure, beautiful and relaxing.
The atmosphere is unique : quiet, luxurious, colonial, old 1900's palace style
The beach is, according to me, the best one in Mauritius (far better than the Prince Maurice or Taj Exotica, for instance).
The service is fabulous. The hotel won a prestigious international reward this year for its exceptionnal service, and I fully agree with it.
The food is excellent. I tend to prefer the Dining Room (vs. The Plantation), which was the opposite the first 2 times I stayed in the hotel.

But... in October 2007, this was the 3rd time I stayed at the Residence. And this was the first time I had to complain.

1. Our ocean front room was quite noisy : noise coming from the corridor outside, or noise coming from our neighbours. This was really problematic during the first 5 nights, and we could hardly sleep more than 4 or 5 consecutive hours without being disturbed by a "boom-boom", loud voices, steps in the corridor or a couple of children playing with a ball at 6:30 am... They should really try to solve this problem (eg. by installing a second door in the room between the main room corridor and the bedroom).
2. The service level was a bit lower than before, mostly because of the exceptionnal occupation rate (98%). One day I had to "pray" to get a towel to sit around the swimming pool... But overall, it was still exceptionnal.
3. There were so many people in the hotel that one day we didn't find any avalaible seat around the pool or on the beach, at 10:00 am !!
4. No golf course, but I knew that already. And they don't have any "correct" agreement / partnership with another hotel on the island (except with the Belle Mare, but you still have to pay almost 100€ for a green-fee)

All in all, I'm still convinced that this is one of the best hotels in the world, especially thanks to the service level, the beach, and the fantastic colonial & 1900's palace atmosphere.
But don't underestimate the issues above, if you think about going there.

We were recommended this hotel by good friends who have stayed there twice before and are about to travel there again. We had high expectations, and guess what we were not disappointed. From the moment we first arrived until we departed the service was first class. Greeted by cold towels and iced tea, check-in in your room it started fabulously. We had an ocean view room No.365 which did overlook the ocean. Our room was spacious, exceptionally clean and iced champagne, fresh fruit and gifts awaited out arrival as we were celebrating our Coral Anniversary (35 years). Although not in the first flush of romance we found The Residence an absolute delight, service when you wanted it, quietness when you didnt. Yes singers were in the bar each night and I can understand if you had children you wouldnt want a room close by, however we found the hotel ideal for us!

The Plantation restaurant was exceptional, and we would like to say that Pritan, Bruno, Chris and Vikram gave us exceptional service, sometimes beyond all expectations. A few among too many to mention were Chandni, who greeted us every night in the bar with her beautiful smile and wonderful saris. Singh and Kumar in the Dining Room at breakfast were so attentive. The Concierges namely Herve Abel and Desire were so helpful in organising trips for us as this was our first trip to Mauritius. Our butler was called Mustafa and again the service was great. The rose petal baths he ran for us were a pure delight.

Would we recommend this hotel? YES, YES YES. We do realise everyone has there own ideas of a holiday, this one matched our criteria and exceeded it. Not only were there places to visit, but we had the sanctuary of a wonderful hotel to come back to.

Drinks were not cheap but probably in keeping with a hotel of this standard. We hope to certainly return and it will be to The Residence. We have even taken a brochure of their sister hotel in Tunisia. Hope you find this review helpful.

We were really looking forward to our break at The Residence after reading so many good reviews. However, we were really disappointed. It is a 5 star hotel but in our opinion, it does not give 5 star service. The room was beautiful, the beach and the pool. However, what we found hard was having 3 course meals every night. At breakfast, it always seemed like the waiters wanted to seat us as far away from the view as possible. The cost of a bottle of wine is staggering, worse than London. Expect to pay more than western prices here, for anything, in or outside of the hotel. Would we go back to Mauritius? Yes, at some point. Would we go back to The Residence? No. That says it all.
