La Pirogue is set in fabulous grounds and has a lovely long stretch of beach with plenty of umbrellas & sunbeds. The buffet restaurant can seat 100s at one sitting but sadly caters predominantly for families. There was a distinct lack of spicy creole cuisine possibly due to the numbers of children eating there. There are no adult only dining areas and the 2 bars - the Blue Bar and Beach Bar were also family orientated. Absolutely great if you are on a family holiday but not very romantic for couples, wanting to get away from it all.

The standard rooms are definitely worth booking over the superior rooms. Even thought they are set slightly further back from the beach, they are not much smaller, cheaper and you do not have all of the beach-goers wandering past. The upside is their seaview and comfy loungers. The geckos are welcome visitors as there are flies/mosquitos - wear deet repellant at night.

Sadly we did not get to use the pool which was in a lovely setting as this was also busy with children. More enjoyable sunbathing to be had on the beach and swimming in the gorgeous Indian Ocean. Reef shoes are a must as there is quite a bit of coral about and sea urchins are painful if stepped on.

Hot tip - buy your water, beer, crisps, wine from the supermarkets located outside of the hotel (turn left from outside the main gate - a short stroll away). Bottled water should be part of the Half Board package to avoid people falling ill from dehydration as you cannot drink the tap water and the hotel were charging 2€50 for a bottle.

Tipping - we decided to tip our friendly waitors, maids & mobile bar waitor individually at the end of our holiday rather than one large tip added to our final hotel bill. We were concerned that one large tip might not be distributed to the right people as there were so many staff. We tipped the porters on arrival & departure.

We would not recommend this hotel for a romantic break. There is a Kids & Teens Club which is brilliant if you are holidaying as a family and an extensive babysitting service too. The main 'international buffet' restaurant was good value if not a bit bland and the Paul & Virginie seafood restaurant expensive due to the weak £.

What a hotel! What an island! From arrival to departure, the hotel does not cease to surprise you pleasantly. The team is extraordinary, there is nothing they cant do for you. Location is a dream, garden of palm trees makes you feel in paradise. Everything is neat and tidy, the rooms are very clean and spacious. All the hotel restaurants are excellent, with a rich range of food, from seafood to excellent desserts. The main restaurant, Thatches has a wide variety of food. We tried all the other bids, Paul et Virginie and Citronella, and the main restaurant at hotel Sugar Beach. Many options and high serving standards. I read here that many tourists complain of high prices, especially for drinks. The prices are not higher than in other five star resorts. A beer costs 4 euros, water paid 1.5 euros, 2.5 euros for soft drinks and lunch at the Beach Bar not cost more than 12 euros. I can say that it is cheaper than other five star hotels on exotic destinations. And I tried some till now. So I highly recommend this hotel with all my heart. It's worth every penny.

We stayed in a superior room for 7 nights, and found the room spacious, ideally situated almost on the beach and very clean. The staff are friendly and even presented me with a cake on my birthday. Valentine's was made special with a fabulous dinner on the beach followed by a disco between the palms! The food was well presented and tasty, and the service very good. They have a good entertainment program which included a wine tasting one evening. The food and drinks which aren't included are quite pricey, but this is probably more due to our poor South African currency. All in all, we had a fantastic holiday and highly recommend La Pirogue. We will be back!

This was our fifth visit to this hotel and quite frankly it just gets better. The staff are just fantastic nothing is too much trouble. They always have a smile on their faces and if you have any sort of problem it is solved easily and quickly. The general ambience immediately makes you feel very relaxed. The gardens have a wonderful amount of shade which is a must in Mauritius. Their sister hotel , Sugar Beach, does not have anything like the amount of shade that La Pirogue has and to our taste it was a bit too brash. I mention this as some reviewers have said that they found La Pirogue old fashioned, we don't think so. It has a wonderful character all of its own and the indvidual little thatched cottages where the bedrooms are housed are magnificent. We found the food very good, dishes at both breakfast and dinner are freshly cooked for you - great for a poached egg or a stir fry. We were lucky as we had decided to go all inclusive and this made an enormous difference as the prices for drinks and lunches is astronomical. The management advise you to drink bottled water but this costs 2.50 Euro for 1.5 litres from your mini bar, 2.50 Euro for 1 litre from the bar. As the weather was very hot during our stay we would have spent between 15 to 17 Euros a day on water alone had we not been on the all inclusive tarriff. I definitly feel that bottled water should be supplied as part of the half board tarriff as it is an absolute necessity of life. A small can of beer is 4 Euros and an ordinary bottle of wine 23 to 30 Euros. Lunch for two is around 20 Euos without drinks. We also drank a lot of fruit cocktails from the bar mobile at least 3 each at 6 Euros each and a rum cocktail worked out at 7.5 Euros. Even though the all inclusive is about 51 Euros per person per day which does seem expensive we would have ended up paying about 150 Euros per day had we just been on half board. We also felt that 6 Euros for half an hour on the computer to book our seats on the return aircraft eyewatering as was 1Euro per minute for a local phone call and 13.80 Euros for two pairs of trousers and a shirt to be laundered. The half board option included the hire of good quality sailing dingys and wind surfers. Trips on the glass bottomed boat and snorkelling trips. Snokells and flippers are provided as well. All in all we would say the basic package provides excellent value for money in what to us were very elegant surroundings but unless you go all inclusive you will have a very expensive holiday as drinks and lunches are so hugely expensive.

We spent a week in a Superior Room as part of our honeymoon. Overall we had a great week, the weather was perfect (despite the fact that it seemed to rain a lot in other parts of the Island), the facilities were great, and the food was good. We particularly enjoyed the beach, the snorkelling (you can borrow snorkelling gear from the boathouse whenever you want), the table tennis, the beach bar and the beautiful grounds.

Overall I would say the hotel is just about a 4-star, and definitely not anywhere close to 5-star. Just from walking through the Sugar Beach Hotel next door we thought that it looked better overall. La Pirogue seemed good for families, there were lots of children around, and lots of organised activities.

Our room was quite old and worn (and the standard rooms were very small). The reception and buffet areas were also very basic. Connecting to the internet via wifi was very expensive, and the system was not very user friendly (although once connected it did work well).

Our biggest disappointment was the level of service at the hotel, particularly from the ‘guest relations’ (reception) staff. When we arrived it turned out that the hotel had made a mistake with our booking and did not have a superior room available, they did not handle this well, although did manage to ‘find’ one by later that night. They also did not seem very willing to help with planning meals in the different restaurants around La Pirogue and Sugar Beach or with letting you know all of the choices (perhaps it was easier and cheaper for them to have everyone use the main buffet?) Just for information (for anyone else going to LP)... under the half board plan you can eat for free at ‘Thatches’ (the LP Buffet), ‘La Badiane’ (Mauritian restaurant at LP, with set menu), ‘Mon Plasir’ (Sugar Beach buffet, with a different theme every night) and ‘Citronellas’ (Beachside restaurant in between LP and Sugar Beach with full a la carte menu). There are also two other restaurants - Tides at Sugar Beach and Paul & Virginie at LP, and at these you get a €15 credit per person. However... for everything except the main LP buffet you will need to make a reservation through reception and it seems that these are regularly ‘fully booked’ even though they don’t look full. We did manage to eat at La Badiane and at Citronellas and both were really good (better than the main buffet we thought). Our advice would be to make bookings in all of the different restaurants as soon as you arrive so that you can get to try everything.
