When you get to Novgorod and start exploring it, you have a feeling that it's like a torn necklace - you find 'pearls' everywhere. even in some unexpected places. It's the case with the town ancient chirches - you can come across one even in the backyard of an apartment block. But Spasa-na-Iliene (St.Saviour Chirch in Ilien street) is situated in a kind of a crescent- at the end of a nice old streen lined with apple-trees. This chirch is unique, it dates back to the 13th century and was wall-painted by one of the most outstanding artists of his time - Thepphannes the Greek, But, unfortunatelly, it was barbarously destroyed by the Nazy during the World War the Second, and only thanks to the restorers' committment, we can now see some of the remains of the survived masterpiece. It's definitely worth a visit.
