Very well located by the Neva river in St. Petersburg, it was the perfect place to stop by at the end of a walking day for some good beer at affordable prices and a beautiful view of the riverside. Reccommended and a place to return to.

We had some drinks here and a salad (even when the kitchen was actually closing!). The atmosphere is calm and nice.

Located right next to the main building of the St. Petersburg University, this cheerful place is a master of all trades. It positions itself as a brewery, which it is, but actually when it comes to that, it is one of the best reasonably priced restaurants/tea shops around for lunch, dinner, or dessert, whatever. Since it is so close to both the University and the main tourist attractions, I for myself, was here dozens of times, with colleagues, friends, visitors, students,...
What makes this place so absolutely unique, is its structure and location. It is housed in the left wing cellar of the Russian Academy of Sciences built in the 1780-ies by Giacomo Quarenghi (the cellar of the right wing is occupied by the Grand Cafe Neva). Actually, inside you can touch the original stones and bricks of the vaults and window niches. Across the street some 20-30 meters, there the main building of the St. Petersburg University, by Domenico Trezzini.
If you take a table outside, straight across the river you face the Admiralty building, by Andreyan Zakharov, the symbol of the city. Slightly to the right of it you see the St. Isaac's Cathedral, by Auguste de Montferrand, then the huge equestrian monument of Peter the Great, the Copper Horseman, by Etienne Falcone, another symbol of the city. Then again the twin buildings of the Governing Senate, and the Holy Synod, the last major project by Carlo Domenico Rossi.
To the left of Admiralty, behind the Palace bridge you see the imposing structure of the Winter Palace built for Catherine the Great by Francesco Rastrelli, and then further palaces of the Palace Embankment. You cannot think of a better view, in this city. Here you are, dining right in the centre of the Russian intellectual power, with the major symbols of the Russian imperial, state, military and church power right in front of you, across the river.
It would be very much worth it even without any extras. With excellent live beer and most acceptable food, it becomes a must for any serious visitor of the city. They only have 3--4 beers: Lager, Dunkel, seasonal, and sometimes unfiltered/Weizen, but these are excellent beers brewed on the premises, fresh, sharp, and very cheap (just over 2 euros per pint, which is a bargain for what they are).
The food is also very convincing, mostly unadulterated traditional German and Russian home type food: pickled vegetables, smoked fish, hot salads, dense thick soups, sausages, very substantial fish and meat main dishes, whatever. But cooked right, by a professional chef, they obviously acquire a completely different quality. As for desserts, I would strongly endorse their Strudel, formidably hearty and served with two balls of ice cream, which could constitute a meal in itself.

The food here is excellent and it is frequently by both locals and tourists, even the odd student. The interior is wood-dominated with a slightly medieval feel and located quite near St. Petersburg State University.

The only thing that put us off with this restaurant was what appeared to a "bouncer" (hopefully not the manager) with a very hateful expression on his face as guests arrived. Perhaps they have had problems in the past with various visitors, but this does not sit well with business visitors who are paying generously to eat here in an international climate where businesses are being discouraged from doing business with and spending money in Russia.

Otherwise the staff was professional.
