The Angleterre Hotel is a charming little hotel in what I think is the best location in St. Petersburg - Right on St. Issac's Square. Even in the winter, we didn't mind walking because it seemed many great attractions were nearby. The hotel also offers a warm little bar with captivating streetside views . . . We were there on a snowy evening, and it was exquisite. The staff is especially friendly, and the morning breakfast buffet was better than most I've experienced. The room was nice, if a bit small, but I upgraded for an amazing view of St. Issac's Cathedral - well worth the nominal charge.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the square - the $ increase is nominal and well worth it!!!

I had a short stay in St Petersburg, but hotel location is the best. In front of Cathedral, with short distance to touristic points. Hotel service is excelent, front desk helpfull, waiters at restaurant very friendly and breakfast has a huge variety, impossible taste everythingin 2 days only! Rooms are comfortable, bathrooms clean and good hairdryer (good for brushing). Recommend the hotel always!!!

Great location, short walk from some of the main attractions in the city, the hotel also has the best view of St Isac's cathedral (make sure you get a room view a view). If you are a literary buff, might be interesting to know that in one of the rooms Sergey Esenin died... There is a nice cafe attached to the hotel, good option for cold days hangout. Overall, definitely worth a visit.

I have been there for 3 nights; location is quite nice, close to the Nevsky Prospekt. The rooms are a bit cold and old fashioned decorated but the staff are really nice. I specially like the restaurant part and the variety of breakfast ;)

My wife and I have just had six wonderful days in St Petersburg. We travelled with Kirker (who were very good) and selected the Hotel Angleterre as our base.

It is in a superb position, directly opposite the awe-inspiring St Isaac's Cathedral, 10 minutes walk from the Winter Palace/ Hermitage/ General Staff museums, 10 minutes the other way from the Yusupov Palace, 20 minutes walk from the Faberge museum.

The staff at the hotel could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Most spoke very good English and they were clearly very well trained.

Our room was comfortable and clean if a little warm (it was icy cold outside and although the view of St Isaac's was wonderful, the cold blast and inevitable traffic noise with the window open meant keeping it mostly closed) The breakfasts were splendid with plenty of choice of good quality, fresh ingredients. Great coffee too! Again the staff were first class.

We ate at the hotel restaurant on our first evening before we'd got our bearings and it was a good meal. Italian menu, good choice, not cheap but good quality. We would have happily eaten there again had it not been for the fantastic choice outside.

Although quite a large hotel, the Angleterre maintains a feeling of warmth and friendliness brought about by its staff and general ambiance. We'd definitely stay there again.

As a footnote, St Petersburg is the most wonderful city we've ever visited. If you like art, architecture, parks, palaces, history, music (all kinds) great food and drink and atmosphere plus the ability to get about easily on foot, by bus, by metro or by cab, you'll be in awe. If in doubt, go there.

We wanted to try a variety of restaurants including Russian and Western cuisine and were recommend the following. We now have no hesitation in doing the same:

No.1 Vodka House Restaurant (and small Vodka museum) on Konnogvardesky bulvar. (Good Russian food, 10 minutes walk)

Restaurant Stroganov, (great steaks) same location but slightly nearer.

Teplo on Bolshaya Morskaya, 7 minutes walk. Great atmosphere, great food, fusion of eastern, western and Russian. Very comfortable, great staff.

Dachniki, Nevsky Prospekt. A basement Russian family restaurant, very atmospheric, comfortable and laid back. Good inexpensive food. 20 mins walk.

Sicaffe on Gorokhovaya ul. Fantastic atmospheric cafe/ restaurant. Great food and drinks. Come in out of the cold for the best hot chocolate you'll ever taste. 10 minutes walk and on the way back to the hotel from the Hermitage!

We also booked a guide for a couple of our museum visits who was superb and worth her weight in gold in our opinion. Drop us a line if you need details.
