Several bridges open at night along the Neva River to allow passage of large ships. Palace Bridge drew large crowds both on the river bank and on boats on the water. It is a colorful spectacle. However, having seen road bridges open in other parts of the world, I found this over-rated expecially as we had to visit in the middle of the night. Didn't see any large ships pass through. Perhaps this is just a tourist gimic today.

In 1901, they had a competition as to who should design the bridge and it took over eight years to choose a winner, and construction started in 1912. But it was not until 1939 that the intricate parts of the bridge were completed like the lion sculptures, railing and lampposts, etc. it now carries 30,000 cars a day. Beautiful bridge in beautiful St Petersburg. You can’t miss it since you will be passing it when you visit the various palaces, palace square, etc. Better yet, take a boat tour as it gives you a different perspective of the buildings on the boat versus by car or bus.

They raise the drawbridges in St Petersburg at night for larger boats to pass. It is a tradition for even locals to go and admire the procedure, but be careful not to get stuck to the other side since there are time slots the bridges are again down and you can drive over them if it is a calm, warm evening, then it is a marvellous thing to see. Being on the Palace Bridge you can also see the next bridge to the opened. Therefore it is also worth to the raising drawbridge boat tour. You get closer view of the spectacular occasion. Everything is lit up and the anxiousness comes creeping in while you look at your watch to see the marvel to happen very special! Loved it!

I decided to do this activity because of my crazy daughter. Because I was away from the city I had to book a private vehicle to get us there and back. For me this was one of the wonders of the world. Between 1am and about 5 30 am about four to five bridges open and close. This is an activity never to be missed. A huge crowd gathers here. The other bridges were not so crowded. One could stand on the side to view or do this activity by boat. Something I will remember in a long long time.

The Palace Bridge is a spectacular sight. Without watching it actually open and close, it’s difficult to gauge the enormity of the thing.
