Spent three nights at the clubhouse in September. Very happy with stay. Terrific location, friendly and helpful staff. Shamian island is a peaceful and quiet oasis in this hectic city.
The hotel rooms are large and clean. Bathroom is spectacular and spacious. The restaurant may not offer much, but there are plenty of other options nearby.

All the old colonial buildings on this tiny island (sand bank) have been restored to their orginal condition...well almost, this includes the Maritime Cusoms Service Clubhouse, which is now a listed bullding of historical importance. From the outside, the place looks very inviting, the security guards smile at you and do offer help, if they see you struggling with your bags / suitcases I'm sure. There is no bell boy or porter or concierge but, you will find a young girl at the reception desk speaking little to no understandable English.
We were booked into a double room on the 2nd floor, and were guided (with our luggage) to the lift. The ride to the 2nd floor was smooth in the glass walled cage. The lift shaft is actually located in the middle of the original staircase, which runs along the side walls up the 3 floors. We found our room, opened the old door with a standard key, and walked in. The room was huge, with a fireplace on one side, above the mantle, an oil painting depicting an english country scene. The ceilings are very high, and of architectural as well as building - technical interest....all of original substance (approx 1904). Entering the bathroom was a bit of a surprise primarily for the size of this room, with the huge glass walled shower cubicle, huge toilet, and tiny wash basin. the windows have shutters they can be opened by hand. Floor is carpeted with a cable channel running under it - power cables to the flat screen TV...nice feature to stub your toes on when dashing to the bathroom in the middle of the night! The kingsize bed was neatly made up, but found to be rock solid, giving us a hell of a night's sleep together with a column type airconditioning unit rattling away in the corner. The refrigeration unit outside on the balcony made regular clunking and hissing noises throughout the night. To cap it all, the bed began to smell of urine and stale perspiration...disgusting! and prompted us to change rooms.
Breakfast? there was none included in the price, and quite frankly, dont bother, unless youre a glutton for a bowl of soapy water and a dimsun!
We came to stay here because Shamian is very peaceful, clean, has several good restaurants, and is of historical interest. The Clubhouse itself, is restored as best possible, taking into consideration the usual slap dash, and thoughtless execution of detail work which, also applies to the interior. This place can be considered a B&B without the second B and thoroughly overpriced for it. Not good value for money. I wont be returning again however, having said that, it is worth coming here to have a look, have a decent coffee, or other beverage in the bar - the staff are friendly enough, and made an effort to serve us well.
