This place is huge at approx 14km to do the complete circuit. We walked halfway before opting to hire a tandem bike for the rest of our journey. The tandem bike was so much fun. Your tour around the 14 square kilometres of the old city gives you a great perspective and view of all its features. A visit to Xi'an is not complete without an outing on one of China's oldest, largest and best preserved ancient city walls.

Rented bicycles to ride around the wall. Excellent way to see the city within the wall. Bicycles were not very comfortable but it beats walking. Be warned! It is nearly 14km around the entire wall. The ground isn't all smooth. Quite a bit of uneven stoned ground which makes riding rather strenuous. That said, it is an excellent workout. Bike rental time limit = 2hours. Starting from the South gate, We realised 45minutes had passed when we reached the West gate. So, riding like crazy we managed to return the bikes with 10 minutes to spare. BUT you can always return the bike at any of the other stations at the gates and walk the rest of the way. Or alternatively, just pay for a buggy ride back. :o)

If you're from the Bell Tower area, the South Gate entrance can be reached by foot as the distance is just 900m. While the North Gate entrance is 2km away from the Bell Tower.

Bicycle rental is cheaper at the North Gate though which is ¥20 for 2 hours and ¥100 for the deposit per person compared to the South Gate ¥40 for 2 hours and ¥200 deposit. However the bicycle are not available during the heavy snow.

Well.. It was pretty disappointing as some parts were closed due to some maintenance work. The wall has too many climbing stairs and not suitable for elderly I guess. Go during day time for a city view and night time for beautiful lights which can be seen from outside the wall.

Our visit started from the South Gate on foot but later hired bicycles on the top of the wall and cycled the whole way around which took an hour and a half.

It is thoroughly recommended if you want to get a sense of the scale of the original Tang Dynasty (7th-10th C) city which was for a long period the capital of China. It was at the time (early Medieval in Europe) the largest city in the world.

Although there are only small parts of the truly original wall left, it has over time been restored throughout and is apparently the only city in China retaining a full “original” city wall.

Buildings within the city wall are restricted in height but outside the wall many huge tower block offices and residential buildings have been built in more recent years.
