Maybe we were really unlucky or just blind, but I expected to see LOTS of wildlife. We saw ONE heron at the entrance to the park then NOTHING after that single sighting. Grounds were OK but they are man- made

We hired a taxi driver for a day trip beyond Hangzhou City and the West Lake. XiXi Wetland Park was our first stop in the morning. We took the boat ride and spent about 2 hours walking in the park. It was in June, we really enjoyed the beautiful and tranquil environment, nice vegetation, green grassland, flowers blooming! It's not crowded during the weekdays unlike other overcrowed tourist attractions in China.

This Wetland is a suitable place of interest for jogger, picnic goer, etc. Best to visit in the morning so that you can have a good boat ride and go up 3 different piers. The air is good. Good for strolling. There is also a Relaxation village there with nice ambience and restaurants. Half a day is good enough. Do not go after 4pm unless you are only going there to stroll or jog. the last boat ride is at 5pm. Last tram is at 6.30pm. However most museums and shops closes at 5pm.

The park itself is free and you can walk along the Main Street and several side paths and see plenty of ponds, trees, grasses and bamboo. We did not see much wildlife. There are more interesting birds along the Grand Canal.
For additional fees you can enter the restricted set of trails or ride in a boat and pretend that you are on a safari. Other fee areas let you visit nice gardens and such. These are pleasant. All-in-all a nice break from the noise of the city, just don't expect to see herons, cranes and egrets.

I had a 3 hours long trip to Xi xi wetland park. Had a great time. Full of peace and tranquility. Lovely weather and so calm. Plus a few food stalls with local dishes. In my view a must for anybody visiting Hangzhou.
