The zoo is really small and we finished it in 1 hour as the zoo was about to be closed.
Animal enclosure does not seem to have proper enrichment activities and the space is not enough as well. Savannah animals at the zoo such as lions, zebras and giraffes were kept in a small enclosed space with minimal space to roam around. The lion seemed like it was in a fish tank!
The orang utans also looked really distressed. Was quite disappointed in the welfare of the animals and the stress levels of the animals as well.
The location of the Zoo may be inconvenient when taking public transport. It is easily a good 10-15 mins walk from the nearby subway station. Requires to walk through the park before arriving at the zoo entrance.
Spent a good 3-4 hours around the Zoo. There is a petting zoo area which will be very popular with young children. As it was a cold day, most of the animals were kept indoor. May see more activities during spring or summer periods. Great seeing the polar bears enjoying the cold weather.
This very small zoo is recommended for families with children - good place for them to run around for a few hours.
Access is a pain, I suggest taking a taxi from the city instead of the train and bus as it’s just not worth the hassles.
No comparison to Asahikawa
The zoo is of decent size for a 1-day trip. My son enjoyed the wolf and the seals. The venue is super clean. Good balance of indoor-outdoor displays.
The main highlight of this zoo was the polar bear and I wasn't disappointed as I got to see the polar bear in action in its big den. The only bad side of this zoo is the foul odor in a lot of the animal homes. I have been to a lot of zoos and this is by far the smelliest of them.
My visit made me depressed. I think zoos should focus on a few interesting animals and create living spaces for these animals that don't make them apathetic. Seeing giraffes in cages where they can barely turn around is really a shame. The ostriches looked stressed, the sad bears only seemed to be looking for a way out. Huge birds in cages where they can't really fly around. We as humans should know better today.
