This zoo features the animals from Hokkaido such as the Ezo Momonga, Hokkaido Squirrel, Japanese Rat Snake, Japanese Glass Lizard, Japanese Odd-tooth Snake, Mamushi Pit-viper, Japanese Forest Rat Snake, Japanese Striped Snake, Ezo salamander, Japanese Tree Frog and Ezo Brown Frog.
The animals look generally happy and look to be well cared for. Unfortunately, the birds are kept in large metal cages and are a sad sight.
This was a spur of the moment visit as we were in Maruyama Park and my mom wanted to check out the zoo. We had a great time there and enjoyed seeing animals we couldn't normally see at other zoos, like the red pandas, giraffe, and meerkats. We spent a few hours walking around the zoo and checking out the exhibits. We did see a few animals that didn't seem like they wanted to be in the outside exhibit, like the orangutan who looked like he just wanted to go into the back, as he or she kept knocking on the door.
Unfortunately, our visit was on a Monday so we didn't get to see the zoo :( We'll come back anyway! During Mondays, the zoo is closed.
The zoo is really small and we finished it in 1 hour as the zoo was about to be closed.
Animal enclosure does not seem to have proper enrichment activities and the space is not enough as well. Savannah animals at the zoo such as lions, zebras and giraffes were kept in a small enclosed space with minimal space to roam around. The lion seemed like it was in a fish tank!
The orang utans also looked really distressed. Was quite disappointed in the welfare of the animals and the stress levels of the animals as well.
The location of the Zoo may be inconvenient when taking public transport. It is easily a good 10-15 mins walk from the nearby subway station. Requires to walk through the park before arriving at the zoo entrance.
Spent a good 3-4 hours around the Zoo. There is a petting zoo area which will be very popular with young children. As it was a cold day, most of the animals were kept indoor. May see more activities during spring or summer periods. Great seeing the polar bears enjoying the cold weather.
This very small zoo is recommended for families with children - good place for them to run around for a few hours.
Access is a pain, I suggest taking a taxi from the city instead of the train and bus as it’s just not worth the hassles.
No comparison to Asahikawa
