Hotel Granvia Kyoto
Ranked #12 of 407 Hotels / Ryokan in Kyoto
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 5 February 2012

Our first stay at Granvia Hotel exceeded my usual expectations of a 5 star hotel in a City. My hubby and I booked for a superior room but was surprisingly upgraded to a Deluxe room, with all our personal requests granted, of staying in higher floor facing the Kyoto Tower. The view was magnificent, day or night. The service was excellent and very professional, the young lady staff explaining all the details of our stay and the complete amenities of the room. There's even a complimentary big bottled water, Italian coffee and japanese tea. The location was perfect for any traveller (just at the top of JR Train Station!). Very Awesome and Fab hotel to stay. I recommend booking in advance directly to the hotel website to avail of their discounts. Will definitely recommend this hotel and come back again in my future stays!

Room Tip: Higher floors facing North or City View!

The Granvia is a lovely hotel in a fantastic location. It's so easy to get off the airport Haruka train, and just glide up the escalators to the hotel at Kyoto station. No fuss. The staff are so professional and the rooms are lovely. You can walk out of the hotel and onto a bus or train or the subway or into a taxi. What more could you ask for?

Hard to know whether to give this 5 stars. Couldn't fault the staff or the room or the location. A very professional set-up. And the nicest of this kind of hotel room we've ever had with an excellent bathroom. But there were some odd elements, as other reviewers have highlighted. Seems particularly cheapskate to charge for even basic tea and coffee (about 350 yen a time!). But there's also a table charge at the bar in the evenings, of 350 yen per person, even for hotel residents and for a hotel in this category to charge so much for the pool facilities seems mean. We got a good deal on the room price (the best deal we found was by going direct to the hotel website) but might not have felt so positive had we paid a lot more. Very attractive lobby area, and some nice touches: artwork in the corridors is better than usual, for example. Plenty of restaurants, both in the hotel itself and in the department stores etc in the same building. Fun watching the trains, and parts of the architecture are spectacular. A comfortable stay.

Great location right at the JR Kyoto station, with the bus terminus and taxis right below. Walking distance to some of the sights in Kyoto as well (Nishi Hongan-ji, Higashi Hongan-ji). Hotel was well appointed, BUT was missing some amenities in-room that me and the missus found a little puzzling, esp for such a splendid hotel otherwise. Firstly, there's no in-room safe, and you would have to deposit your valuables at the reception. Very inconvenient. Secondly, there's no complimentary coffee/tea, only a bottle of water. Come on, even a simple business hotel like the Mercure Ginza provided both the safe and the coffee/green tea?

Room Tip: Try to get the North tower rooms, for a view of the Kyoto Tower and the nearby sights.
