I don’t have a lot of comparisons, but really enjoyed the stay. Everything was very clean and quiet. Rooms are minimalist but reasonably spacious. Wifi is good, there is good AC/heat, and private toilet with shower.
The onsen (one for men, one for women) was nice to warm up after a chilly evening.
The location is good for transit. We used a bus day pass to get around to temples, and for dinner in Gion. This worked out really well for us - you can get the pass at the front desk, as well as a bus map/guide which was helpful. Maybe all Japanese buses are similar, but you board from the back and pay (show your pass) only when you get off.
I believe there is an optional breakfast (we didn’t eat there). All the staff are friendly. No language problem.More
