Toshiharu is an old Kyoto inn (Machiya style house) with traditional tatami mat rooms and two charming inner gardens to gaze on. The staff were wonderful at getting us oriented and were fluent in English as well as other languages. The ryokan is located about a 4 minute walk from the Goji subway station, so very convenient to getting around. Rooms were absolutely superb and the traditional Japanese bath was a real plus. This is an old house, and as such may not be the perfect place if you have mobility issues. Stone walk ways, narrow stairs, and futons on the floor might be more difficult for some travelers. But fur us, it was a great cultural experience that made our Kyoto trip so special. Would absolutely stay here again and recommend it highly!

Thank you very much for staying with us and your warm comment posted here!
It's our great pleasure to hear that you had special time here and pretty much enjoyed your stay in Kyoto.
You're exactly right in a point that our ryokan is so old that some of our guests have difficulty going upstairs, or sleeping on the futon beds. Appreciate your kind understanding though.
We are truly looking forward to seeing you again soon!
Thank you

From the moment you arrive you are greeted at the door with such warmth once your slippers are on you are then transported to a Japanese lifestyle. We stayed in the family room overlooking the garden which was delightful. Your host shows you through all the amenities before setting you down for a green tea and Japanese treat. I highly recommend the traditional Japanese breakfast cooked fresh straight to the table.
The house itself is full of history and the host is there to fill you in on its history.
We absolutely loved toshiharu ryokan and our stay will always be remembered.

Very kind English-speaking staff, delicious breakfast, beautiful tatami room and garden, and convenient central location. Nice Japanese and Western bath options (the Japanese bath is my favorite).
They were also really helpful with calling to make restaurant reservations.

Absolutely loved my two nights at Toshiharu Ryokan. The building is 140 years old and its magnificent! When I arrived, they gave me a tour and offered me some matcha tea, which was delicious! The ryokan has a open air center that looks onto the cutest little garden with a fountain. That’s also where the sinks and restroom are located. There are three sinks that are open for all guests to use and they provide so many ammentities—from lotion and face soap to toothbrushes and razors. Bathroom area was clean as were the toilets. The showers/japanese bath is downstairs and can be reserved for 30 mins in the morning or evenings. I thought this was very sensible so people didn’t have to wait for others to exit. I stayed right at the top of the stairs in a beautiful room! The futon is actually very comfortable here (best one I’ve slept on so far).

The breakfast is an incredible spread of delicious Japanese food! It was absolutely delicious.

I also ended up staying here on my birthday and they were so sweet and got me a small gift to say happy birthday—which was completely unnecessary and so kind.

Highly recommend this ryokan in Kyoto!
