This is just a lovely shrine. Not really out of the way, but tourists don't think about it because it isn't one of the "fancy" shrines. But walk from Central Kyoto along the Kamogawa and follow the river at it's fork into the park that leads to Shimogamo. This is Kyoto history at it's lovliest.

Shimogamo is a lovely shrine to visit on any given day, with a very picturesque stream and many smaller shrines dotted around the area as well as a beautiful woodland area on the road leading to the main shrine. However, it stands out because of it many festivals and events. Throughout the year there are several, the most famous of which is the Aoi Matsuri which includes an impressive horse riding archery display. They also have art exhibitions, coffee festivals and a beautiful harvest moon festival where traditional Japanese music is played. It's within easy walking distance of the Imperial Palace and is definitely worth a short visit even on an average day.

Another world heritage site in Kyoto. While not as glamorous as many other temple attractions in Kyoto, it does offer a nice treed environment for a leisurely stroll.

The day that we visited there was a wedding, a traditional japanese wedding which was pretty cool to see that. And not much tourist at this one, maybe because it´s out of the reach? It was nice to be away from crowded tourist

It's at the end of Keihan line Demachiyanagi station. Cross the river, you will follow a quiet path in the woods to the Shrine. You will definitely see the traditional religious ceremonies and interiors of dining rooms, as well as interesting new way of prayers... Not so interested into the Japanese religion, the architectures would attract your attention.
