This is the most important temple in Arashiyama District. It's a very large and beautiful Zen temple, a World Heritage Site, with a huge Zen garden, prettiest in Autumn with colours of leaves. Need more than 1 hour to walk around and explore the whole area.

A must stop on spiritual pilgrimage to Japanese temples. The gardens are peaceful, and it is a beautifully restored temple in the sweet area of Arashiyama, near the bamboo groves.

This is a nice edifice, from outside. Too bad that we had no time to have a look inside (therefore no entrance fees or discount). The grounds are picture perfect.

I came in through the entrance near Bamboo Forest, so that the Temple and the main pond was at the end of the walk through the garden, which was nice; a beautifully gentle introduction before the main attraction. There's a lookout point at a cliff which you can climb by a short stairway; please do! the view through the trees is amazing. Sit by the main pond on the benches provided and just experience total zen and bliss. Highly recommended.

We visited this place on a weekday afternoon in winter. The crowd was so much lesser compared to fall season. It was very windy during our visit. It was nice to sit on the bench looking the pond and enjoy the serenity there during winter.
