Excellent advice for which vegetarian dishes we should combine. My and my daughter combined the potato and caulifour curry with the vegetable biryani (no extra rise needed) with garlic name and a very nice cucumber/yoghurt mixture.

It's hard to find a place with vegetarian food in Japan. Lived this Indian place. Great staff, great food. I loved the veggie lunch.

I had found this place by accident about 25 years ago when I lived in Japan and was visiting Kyoto. At that time the dishes were superb - fish Tikka was the best I ever had, curries were rich, pungent, and uniquely different. Several Indian friends commented on how good the place was - some went as far as saying this was by far the best Indian (most authentic) food they had outside of India including U.S., England, and Europe.

It was with great anticipation that I found that the restaurant was still in operation on the third floor of the covered mall at the mouth of Teramachi street (at Shijo Dori). The decor was a bit worse-for wear but the waiters and host were welcoming and quick to seat us and take our order.

Ordering many of the dishes that had been our favorites in the past, we were sorely disappointed. Bland samosas (cooked earlier and reheated) served not with chutney but with Ketchup, oily fish Tikka (the Tikka sauce itself had a good flavor but the fish was mushy and not the nice large firm pieces of whitefish used in the past). The curries were sad, tasteless, tomato-heavy affairs, underwhelming in spice and flavor (Vindaloo and Masala were sampled but had nearly the same flavor). The plain nan was good and freshly made, but otherwise this was NOT the Ashoka's of 25 years ago.

I would NOT recommend this place - it was a fine restaurant but now is clearly under new management and cook staff as the quality of the dishes and flavors are gone. The dishes are small portions and moderately expensive.

This is an old-fashioned Indian restaurant with an extensive menu to choose from. We have eaten here twice over the years, once for lunch when it was crowded at midday and recently in the evening when there were few other customers. There are several vegetarian entrees on the menu. The staff are very attentive. The restaurant is upstairs, at the front of the Teramachi Arcade near Shijo Dori.
