Owner description: This Zen Buddhist temple was converted from a former residence of Emperor Kameyama upon his death. The beautiful grounds include several buildings, hiking trails and a classic Zen garden.

This was the closest temple to our hotel, but we saved it to our last day. Firstly, it’s free, and secondly, it’s huge. The setting and the buildings make for great photos. The gate had an upstairs, which charges JPY 500/each, but it is well worth it. The views from the top are spectacular, both of Kyoto and surrounding mountains and of the temple itself. We had a lovely time wandering around, taking photographs and marveling at the ancient buildings. The trees themselves are worth the visit. There is also an associated garden for an extra charge, which we didn’t go in, as we’d seen plenty of gardens by now! Very worthwhile, and easily accessible from Keage station. If you are staying at the Westin Miyako, it’s less than 10 mins walk!

Nanzenji temple is in the hills of Sakyo-Ku area of Kyoto; beautiful setting with lots of trees and pathways. There is an old aqueduct on the property, that is also interesting to see. The gardens are wonderful. Lovely place for a leisurely stroll.

Didnt visit the inside but the daimon provides nice overview of kyoto. There is a spectacular aquaduct which feels roman and is the first one iv seen in japan so far. Did a bicycle tour to visit this one. Recommended to rent a bike

Peaceful temple. We went in the morning and it was not too crowded. Short walk from Keage subway station. Area around the temple is worth a stroll too. Consider Eikan-do and Keage Incline, which are just a short walk away.
