Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

A must see in Kyoto. I felt like a traveled back in time and I was in old Japan. It’s a must see. It didn’t take very long to walk around the area and it was flat for easy walking. I loved the little shops along the way. Definitely sample the green tea ice cream and green tea baumkuchen.

Thank Guame

We were driven down some of the streets (Shinbashi, Hanamikoji and Miyagawacho) enroute to other sites and found it breathtaking and photogenic. Especially worthwhike with a guide who can point out things like the sign with the geiko (aka Geisha) names and the teme they pray at to learn their craft. A guide told us to return in the evening between 5:00 - 6:00 pm if you wish to see the geiko or maiko.

and we learned it was ok to snap a quick pick, but never to follow the women or ask them to stop for a photo as they are on their way to their job.

So nice to stroll around late afternoon and early evening. Lots of small bars and karaokes as well as a host of small, delightful restaurants. Never miss coming here when we’re in town

Interesting to take a walk through this beautiful old area to see the real Japanese architecture. Beautiful old houses, restaurants and shops. Definitely worth the visit. A very easy walk.
