Westin Miyako is in the north eastern corner of Kyoto. On the map it looks a little away from the centre of the city but you may be glad! There is a quiet back trail (hotel staff will direct you) to the stunning Nanzenji Temple, the Path of Philosophy (with many smaller temples running off either side) and it even has its own Japanese garden. I used this trail as my exercise course.
Rooms are spacious and reasonably modern but it is a business style hotel geared for meetings, not cool and designer stylish. BUT you really should try to ask/pay for a high floor Kyoto city view room. When I saw the difference from my rear facing green view room, I wished I could move.
This would have been a 5star review however every experience I had with the concierge desk (which you use a lot in Japan for directions, tips and translations) was abrupt, rushed and unwelcoming. I guess they are too stretched to be friendly as well. The very cheery doorman made up for them every day!
I would recommend this hotel and its great location.
