This is a really great hostel, the staff are really knowledgeable about the area and speak excellent English. There is a large common area on the first floor with a large kitchen complete with fridge/freezers and cupboard space for you and complimentary tea and coffee. There is a nice seating area with cushions and mats as well as table and chairs. There is also an outside area too. We had the twin bunk bed room which also had a small sofa and table. The room was really clean as was the shared bathroom. The hostel has a nice communal feel to it with everyone shuffling around in slippers (you aren't allowed to wear outdoor shoes), and there are movies shown in the evenings which is a good way to meet people. The location is good about 15 mins to the Shinkansen station and 10 mins to the metro. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Room tip: The rooms opposite the bathroom are handy to make a quick dash to during the night!

I wish all hostels were this good! Rooms were austere but very new and clean, beds and pillows were comfy for japanese standard (not rock hard!). Clean linen was provided (not towels, but you could rent one for 100Yen). We stayed in a 6 bed dorm and used the shared bathrooms in the corridor. Not only were they absolutely new but also really clean and user friendly, with a space to change inside the shower separated from the actual "wet" zone, so privacy was guaranteed.
There's a great lounge zone on the second floor to just relax and spend some time, meet people who were really friendly, free wifi all over the place. Also, a fully equipped bathroom that you can use at any time, even if you're not yet lodged in the hostel, (ie. We arrived at 7 am on the overnight bus and had booking for that evening, but wanted to shower after a long trip, they showed us to the bathroom and had no problem in letting us three shower before even checking in and also kept our luggage safe for the day while we visited).
The staff was fantastic, very friendly and helpful, and spoke english too! They gave us maps, we rented bikes relatively cheap (700 yen for the full day) and had a nice breakfast (buffet, all you can eat "continental breakfast" incl. scrambled eggs, sausages, toast with butter and jam, orange juice, tea, coffee...for 680Yen) before starting our visit to kyoto.
Seriously, nicest place I have stayed at in a long time.
We travelled in a group but many people were on their own and it seemed a nice place to meet people!

Room tip: Book early on because it is always really full! (Tried to book it for a saturday with 2 weeks in advance and was already full)

One of the best hostels I have stayed in to date. My friend and I like it so much that we booked accommodation at every single K's house across Japan (there are quite a few). Book ahead though...they definitely book out. The rooms are cute and clean and the locations are always close to public transport. Highly recommend!

The good reviews are right, please check them out. Here are three tips:

1. Solo Accommodation: The website only offers one type of solo room (type c). There are two more types, and you'd have to call the hostel to book them. I suggest you email the hostel to see if there are type a or b rooms on the day of your visit, so you can call for your reservation.

2. Commuting: If you want to see get to K's House from Kyoto Station, get to the main intersection near the Gion area or get to the hostel from these two places, take Bus 206. There are plenty of bus stops at or near the corner of Shichijo-dori and Karawamachi-dori, the biggest intersection less than a minute from K's House (including the one for Bus 206). Check them out to see which buses will take you to your preferred destination.

3. Amenities: There's a hairdryer in the common unisex washrooms. Hurrah for western toilets! Towels rent for 100 yen, which beats lugging around a wet towel across Kyoto. Free use of slippers. Bikes rent by the hour or day.

4. Early Morning: Breakfast available (although I didn't try it). At 6 AM, the only restaurant open (as far as I can tell) is the McDonald's at Kyoto Station. The garden in front of the hostel only opens at 9 AM.

Room tip: Don't fret if they give you a third floor room -- it's just a flight of stairs from the floor with the entrance door.

Another standard K's house very close to the station but nowhere near anything else. The staff are very good and all speak good English. The rooms are characterless but it remains a great place to meet other travellers in the reasonably priced bar or chilling out on the rooftop terrace. The place is very clean. All in all, a good choice in Kyoto and good value, but look around for places closer to the nightlife and sights if being in the 'thick of it' is what you want. If being close to the station is your priority then this could be the place for you.
