Our family did a bicycle tour to Mount Vernon. It was our teens' first experience with bikes with 18 speeds so they probably could have used a little more practice beforehand. They loved the ride though One got going too fast around a turn as the wooden bridges were a little wet and got some road rash, but otherwise a fun and not too difficult ride. It was a nice break from all the indoor sight-seeing and a good family outing.

We were in Washington on holiday from the uk and wanted to go to mount Vernon. After a bit of searching on the Internet found bike n roll offered the option to cycle on the mount Vernon trail, leave the bikes locked up, view the estate then catch the boat back at the end of the day. I pre-booked on the Internet and though paid in full with a complete refund given for cancellations over 24 hours thought if the weather looked bad we could bail out with no financial hit.
We were staying at the omni shoreham hotel a little way out of the centre of DC but it was a simple 30-40 minute tube ride to alexandria. It's about a mile walk to the bike rental, but they have free trolly buses along the route you can use, though the walk is through the pleasant old town area and worth doing if not in a hurry.
The bike rental was easy to find, we were expected and the bikes had been pre sized for our heights and gender as per the email booking. Bikes were made by trek so good, in decent shape and with straight forward gears etc so no problems for novices or kids.
The directions for the trail are given verbally by the staff with photos of the two key left turns. Seen some moans on other reviews, but honestly, if you listen and can remember two pieces of information for about five minutes you won't have a problem.
The trail itself was great, varied and through some interesting countryside, particularly if your not a us resident. Plenty of places to stop if you wish to. Some pedestrians on the trail and the odd local cyclist living out their tour de France fantasies, but really pretty sparsely occupied and for any of you who've bike dodged the madness on the pedestrian areas of the Brookland bridge, a dream.
Seen some comments on here re hills. A few short to medium at best, relatively gentle inclines. Real novices, or the really unfit may need to get off and push, which is fine, but for most people, change up, suck the air in, get a little burn in your legs and blow the cobwebs from your lungs. Any flatter and it would be boring, so enjoy what's a good ride.
At the estate secure your bike and after looking around mount Vernon for a few hours get the boat back.
It's a pretty leisurely boat Road and at 1.30 isn't quick, but the crew maintain an enthusiastic and entertaining commentary and if you've never been before the ride along the potomac gives a whole new perspective to the journey back.
The only limitation with the boat option is you're tied to a specific return time. Cycling back would give you greater flexibility, but a less varied experience. Both options are available.
All in all really good day out, good value for money and if you can be bothered to check their website to notice they're not open every day and can remember where to make two left turns you'll have a great day. Recommended.

Summer holiday, you'd think this is main season. Spending 4 days in Alexandria, we had our minds on the bike & boat trip to Mt Vernon.
Fortunately, we found a flyer of Bike & Roll at the Alexandria visitor centre. And then toured the waterfront for 45 minutes without finding them. Eventually, a friendly man confirmed that the shop without sign and no opening times was their shop. But closed for another day.
Prepare, so you don't get disappointed!
We rented bikes one block away, fine bikes, good helmets. And the trail is a lot easier coming back....!!

I was very excited to do this tour, we biked the monuments the last time in DC and had a great time, so I wanted to give this a try. The staff gave us complete instructions on how to get to Mt. Vernon, no problems there. However, I did struggle a bit on this ride, had to walk the bike up a couple of hills. It was very humid, so that probably didn't help. I would say this was a moderate trail. This was a one and done trip for me. Glad I accomplished the ride, but don't need to do it again. I was extremely hot and sweaty at the end, which made me uncomfortable for a good portion of the afternoon. That put a damper on the Mt. Vernon tour itself. I would only recommend this if it was either spring or fall and you were in good shape or if you want a good workout. Otherwise, I would take public transportation or boat ride.

The Bike & Roll staff in Alexandria was very helpful and friendly. The bike ride was 9 miles going which took a little over an hour (up hill) and about 50 minutes back. The scenery was beautiful and the trail is easy to follow.
